Department Neurointensivists Job Summary The Lead Neurocritical Care APP will provide in-house coverage for neurologically injured patients at night within the Neurocritical Care Unit (NCCU) and with oversight from an attending Neurointensivist. The APP will be responsible for providing care for patients with blunt and penetrating traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, status epilepticus, encephalitis, neuromuscular crisis and the perioperative care of complex neurosurgical patients. Neurocritical Care (NCC) APPs will provide in-house overnight coverage for patients on both the primary NCC service and occasionally Surgical ICU (SICU) patients as needed depending on census. The lead APP will provide guidance for the Neurocritical Care service in association with the Chief of Neurocritical Care, and will take an active role in planning, recruitment, scheduling, template development, professional performance, regulatory compliance, medical education, and patient experience. They will also act as a champion to promote positive departmental culture. Essential Functions: Under established guidelines and in collaboration and/or supervision with practice physician(s), Advanced Practitioners perform routine physical and neurologic examinations, admit patients to the neurocritical care unit and perform core ICU procedures including central and arterial line placement, lumbar punctures, flexible bronchoscopy, and intubation. NCCU APPs formulate medical and psychosocial plans to treat patients, and may have opportunities participate in bedside neurosurgical procedures including EVD, SEPS and intracranial pressure monitor (bolt) placement. Neurocritical Care APPs will operate under high autonomy, provide independent billing at night, and collaborate closely with NCCU/SICU nurses and techs, Neurosurgery APPs, and Surgical and Medical Intensive Care providers. NCCU beds are located within the SICU plant, with overnight coverage for SICU primary patients is provided by surgery or emergency medicine residents. The NCCU APP will also be expected to provide cross-coverage on surgical and trauma patients in SICU when need determined by overall census. (90%) Attends and participates in administrative staff meetings. Evaluates and updates policies and procedures. Communicates with clinical staff regarding any changes in practice policy, or changes in processes, etc. Assists coordination of continuing education in conjunction with NCC Director of Education. Continual involvement in interviewing and hiring (10%)
