About The Position

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. This role is part of TeraWave, a satellite communications network designed to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps anywhere on Earth. This network will service tens of thousands of enterprise, data center, and government users who require reliable connectivity for critical operations. As the Network Modelling and Simulation Engineer, you will play a vital leadership role within a team of specialists, technicians, and engineers, significantly contributing to the operation of the constellation and the network operations center. Your role will involve utilizing your expertise with network modelling and simulation to help define the network architecture of the constellation, create a simulator which can be used to examine implementations of the architecture, and working with the team to realize the architecture. Special Mentions This role will be onsite in Bay Area, CA. It is approved for a temporary remote work exception while our local site is developed Relocation assistance is available for this position Travel may be required up to 15% of the time to Blue Origin facilities and partner locations

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Network Engineering, or related technical field
  • 7+ years of experience in network architecture, design, or engineering
  • Deep understanding of network simulation tools and platforms
  • Strong understanding of networking and network protocols including MEF, SD-WAN, BGP, MPLS, SRv6, L2 VPNs, L3 VPNs
  • Experience with architecting, designing, or developing software-defined networking solutions
  • Strong programming skills in MATLAB, C/C++, Python, or similar languages
  • Proficiency in developing and maintaining network architecture diagrams and technical documentation
  • Data analysis skills for evaluating network metrics and behaviors.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • 10+ years of experience in network architecture with focus on routing
  • Experience with tools such as NS-3, OPNET, or OMNeT++ for simulation
  • Experience with networking for constrained links such as 3GPP and satellite networks
  • Knowledge of spacecraft operations and constraints as they relate to communications systems
  • Familiarity with network function virtualization and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Background in aerospace or defense industries
  • Certifications such as CCIE, JNCIE, or equivalent advanced networking certifications
  • Knowledge of emerging space-based networking standards and technologies

Responsibilities

  • Develop and extend large-scale simulation software for TeraWave's multi-orbit satellite constellation, focusing on network theory, architecture, and performance modeling
  • Simulate and analyze network traffic patterns, bandwidth utilization, and quality of service across various operational scenarios
  • Model and optimize optical inter-satellite links to achieve TeraWave's 6 Tbps throughput targets
  • Develop simulation frameworks to evaluate network resilience against potential failure modes and security threats
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate network capabilities into broader systems and applications
  • Analyze network performance and troubleshoot complex issues across distributed systems
  • Implement security best practices and protocols to protect network infrastructure
  • Evaluate and recommend new networking technologies and solutions to enhance network capabilities and performance
  • Understand the implications of network planning on spacecraft operations and design accordingly
  • Lead technical discussions and provide expert guidance on networking solutions
