About The Position

The Systems Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, and support of the hospital’s enterprise technology infrastructure, ensuring secure, reliable, and efficient operations across two acute care hospitals and affiliated services. This role oversees data center systems, servers, virtualization, storage area networks (SAN/NAS), remote access, backups, and cloud integrations, while ensuring quality resolution to technical issues. The Systems Engineer serves as a technical leader, collaborating with IT leadership, clinical teams, and vendors to deliver scalable infrastructure solutions that support patient care and organizational goals. Demonstrates Service Excellence at all times. Other duties as assigned. Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Required
  • Minimum ten (10) years experience; systems engineering, active directory, virtualization technology, server patching/management and supporting Cisco devices and single sign on
  • 18 years of age
  • Heavy sitting and keyboard use/repetitive hand motion, and light standing, walking, balancing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching/working overhead and pushing and/or lifting up to 25 pounds

Responsibilities

  • Maintains the Information Services inventory, including hardware, software, and documentation.
  • Guides the team in delivering high-quality server, hardware, and application support with timeliness, technical expertise, and a strong customer service focus.
  • Prioritizes and organizes complex technical tasks, balancing multiple projects and support requests to meet deadlines effectively.
  • Collaborates with network staff, vendors, and other disciplines to ensure best practices for integration, performance, and system reliability.
  • Advises leadership on infrastructure improvements, budgeting considerations, and vendor-driven best practices.
  • Monitors system performance and initiates improvements by coordinating with cross-functional teams.
  • Develops, implements, and enforces operational standards, policies, and escalation procedures to maintain service levels.
  • Tracks, documents, and resolves technical issues while minimizing operational impact.
  • Produces reports and metrics on performance, operations, and issue resolution for leadership review.
  • Trains staff on operational procedures, troubleshooting, and cross-training to ensure continuity of support.
  • Oversees hardware and software inventory, recordkeeping, and procurement planning.
  • Evaluates emerging technologies and drives implementation of tools or processes that improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Promotes a culture of professional service by modeling standards, guiding practices, and reinforcing expectations across the team.
  • Facilitates resolution of conflicts during projects by identifying common ground and aligning solutions with organizational goals.
  • Shares feedback with leadership on team capabilities, service effectiveness, and training needs.
  • Designs and integrates enterprise system architecture, including third-party/vendor applications (e.g., GE), into the data center environment.
  • Simplifies complex systems through analysis of operational trends and implementation of sustainable improvement plans.
  • Oversees enterprise applications and infrastructure such as Microsoft Exchange, clusters, printing services, and Active Directory.
  • Leads the technical execution of projects from initiation through completion.
  • Develops specifications for acquisition of servers, SAN switches, storage arrays, and related infrastructure components.
  • Implements complex system integrations, server builds, and cabling in collaboration with the Network Division.
  • Partners with internal teams and vendors to complete audits, produce reports, and manage hosted solutions.
  • Documents system configurations, architectural designs, and operational standards, ensuring accuracy and accessibility.
  • Supports middleware, data center servers, and migrations, including automation, documentation, troubleshooting, and problem resolution.
  • Installs and migrates applications across systems as required.
  • Develops and enforces Standard Operating Procedures and ensures compliance with security policies.
  • Stays current on emerging technologies and identifies opportunities for adoption.
  • Coordinates and contributes to IT projects, ensuring deliverables meet organizational needs.
  • Acts as liaison with the UHS Customer Support Center, managing escalations and monitoring ticket resolution.
  • Participates in an on-call rotation to provide after-hours support.
