The Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) Technologist explains and performs Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) testing under the supervision of an electromyographer.

Requirements

  • Sitting up to 4 hours per day in ½ hour increments.
  • Standing up to 4 hours per day in 15-minute increments.
  • Walking up to 2 hours per day in 15-minute increments.
  • Continuous use of fingers/hands to apply electrodes, operate equipment and data entry on keyboard.
  • Frequent use of upper extremities to reposition patients, transport patients and lift supplies up to 20 lbs.
  • Occasionally pushes EEG equipment for portable studies, approximately 200+ lbs.
  • Occasionally transfers patients up to 300 pounds.
  • Frequent twisting and reaching forward to apply electrodes.
  • Occasionally stoops and bends.
  • Hearing as it relates to normal conversation.
  • Seeing as it relates to general vision, near vision, far vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and visual monotony.
  • Associate's degree preferred, with a concentration in sciences preferred.
  • EMG- Graduate of an accredited/approved neurodiagnostic technology program, hospital based neurodiagnostic educations program, or one year experience as a neurodiagnostic technician preferred.
  • Nerve Conduction specialist must obtain registration within 3-4 years of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Explains and performs Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) testing
  • Ensures that laboratory and testing site adheres to OSHA standards
  • Obtains patient history, demographics, reason for request and enters into study
  • Identifies and eliminates or reduces artifact
  • Evaluates diagnostic data recorded or displayed and reports suspected abnormal findings to physician as appropriate
  • Maintains equipment and supplies associated with diagnostic testing
  • Maintains an accurate archive and retrieval system for original EMG tracings
