About The Position

The Northwest Career & Technical Academy (NCTA), part of the Skagit/Whatcom Consoritum and hosted by the Mount Vernon School District, is seeking a dynamic and experienced Criminal Justice professional to instruct high school juniors and seniors in foundational and advanced topics within the law enforcement field. The ideal candidate will integrate real-world experience with a strong understanding of instructional practices to help students gain the skills necessary for post-secondary education and careers in criminal justice, law enforcement, and related fields. Requirements

  • At least three years of recent and relevant industry experience in law enforcement, corrections, or a related criminal justice field (one year within the last six).
  • Must be eligible for or possess a Washington State Career and Technical Education (CTE) teaching certificate with endorsement in Criminal Justice or Law Enforcement Services.
  • Knowledge of state and federal law enforcement standards, constitutional law, and police procedures.
  • Strong commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, with the ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to integrate academic concepts such as civics, law, reading, writing, and communication into technical instruction.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR certification and meet all OSPI program approval requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Teaching or training experience in a school, military, or police academy setting.
  • Fluency or background in another language, preferably Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, or Mixteco.
  • Knowledge of SkillsUSA Career Readiness Curriculum (CRC) or other leadership development frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging, standards-based instruction aligned to the Criminal Justice Framework, covering: Criminal law and procedures Constitutional law and civil liberties Court systems, ethics, and public safety Patrol procedures and traffic enforcement Crisis intervention, communication, and conflict resolution Physical training
  • Develop and assess performance-based learning activities such as mock trials, scenario simulations, oral board interviews, and Socratic seminars.
  • Maintain a safe and inclusive classroom environment, including physical drills, radio operation, and safety procedures.
  • Support career and college readiness, including resume writing, portfolio development, mock interviews, and articulation for dual credit or certifications.
  • Foster industry connections and invite guest speakers or law enforcement and realated fields professionals for student engagement.
  • Use appropriate technology tools for instruction, student assessment, and communication.
  • Participate in school-wide initiatives, team meetings, and professional development.
  • Attending all relevant professional development and training opportunities to accomplish the objectives of the position.
  • Complying with supervision and evaluation procedures.
  • Complying with District policies and the Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Maintaining consistent attendance and conforming to regular work hours specified under contract.
  • Fulfilling other duties as assigned by the supervisor
