About The Position

Work involves planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating leisure service programs focused on nature and the environment. The supervisor will hire, evaluate, and train staff at the nature parks. There is latitude for independent judgment in creating programs and following established policies and procedures. Work is performed under the general direction of the Assistant Recreation, Park & Arts Director. All employees share components of leadership, management, technical, and team skills to assist in making the City of Largo the community of choice in Tampa Bay. This role demonstrates an understanding and reflection of the City’s mission, vision, and values, and a commitment to achieve organizational goals aligned with the City’s strategic plan. Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education diploma (GED) with two years of college coursework in environmental studies, ecology, biology, or a closely related field
  • Two (2) years directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • CPR and First Aid within 90 days of hire
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and philosophies of nature/environmental studies
  • Knowledge of animal care and nature-based activities
  • Ability to multi-task, maintain budget, lead staff, plan, organize, and implement daily lesson plans
  • Ability to observe program participants and behavior to create a safe environment
  • Ability to maintain effective relations with children, parents, volunteers, and patrons
  • Computer proficiency
  • Good judgment, patience, and problem-solving with participants and volunteers
  • Ability to hire, train, and evaluate staff
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

Responsibilities

  • Follow suggested procedures to assure the highest standards of risk management, employee safety, and risk avoidance
  • Direct staff in program development and direct care of children in a nature camp
  • Monitor a program budget of expenses and revenues
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate multiple nature-based programs
  • Develop special events by assessing needs, planning and organizing activities, supervising the event, and conducting an event evaluation
  • Submittal for Play Catalog and marketing submittal requests for assigned programs; review and oversee website updates
  • Prepare fliers, brochures, and other marketing materials
  • Assist with contract management for instructors, professional services, and rentals
  • Monitor facility schedule, work orders, daily inspections, and repair and maintenance issues; conduct event and program set-ups and all activities for opening and closing of the facility
  • Supervise team members and volunteers, usage of the recreation system, cash registers, and telephone support; oversee customer service in the office for recreation and park patrons
  • Assist with the development and implementation of a facility calendar for programs, building rentals, and special events
  • Enforce rules, regulations, and safety precautions; evaluate safety concerns and make recommendations for improvements; review all injury and incident reports on assigned shift; maintain order and discipline of participants
  • Prepare and process monthly reports, payroll, purchases, requisitions, program evaluations, personnel paperwork, and correspondence
  • Handle recreation system maintenance and updating of activity and facility information
  • May prepare and complete grant submittal and follow-up grant reporting, working closely with Recreation Administration
  • Coordinate a volunteer program
  • Direct a summer camp
  • Coordinate nature-themed classes and events
  • Develop nature-themed lesson plans and ensure that they are implemented in summer camp and facility programs
  • Schedule volunteers and facility maintenance projects
  • Collect payments and ensure that program fees are paid by those registered
  • Purchase needed supplies for the nature center within an allocated budget
  • Conduct daily site inspection of the nature park and center
  • Prepare daily cash reports for all transactions at the nature center
  • Oversee care and feeding of all animals at the nature park
  • Train volunteers in care and handling of animals
  • Make recommendations and maintain facility and program rules and regulations
  • Administer first aid or seek appropriate help; complete injury, incident, and suspension reports
  • Set up equipment and rooms as the program dictates
  • Support honest and transparent decision-making
  • Collaborate with all team members in a way that builds upon ideas and takes personal accountability and ownership of projects, roles, and assignments
  • Openly exhibit a positive attitude, in words and action, and encourage others to do the same
  • Perform related work as required
  • Work as directed during an undeclared and/or a declared emergency, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the official job description
