About The Position

One Natural Resources Technician (Seasonal Worker, Full-time, 40 hours/week) position is available with the Colorado State University (CSU) Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). This position will provide entry-level training and experience on a range of natural resources projects supporting the Natural Resources Management (NRM) program at Bellows Air Force Station, HI. The technician will conduct wildlife surveys/data collection for a diversity of taxa, including flora, waterbirds, sea turtles, and invertebrates. The technician also will monitor wildlife via remote cameras and assist with processing the associated data. Environmental restoration activities will include dune and wetlands restoration projects focusing on controlling/removing invasive plant species and out-planting natives in their place. The ECDP technician may also assist with organizing leading bimonthly outreach/service projects (e.g., small-scale plantings, invasive plant roundups, and beach clean-ups). The technician will also be responsible for maintaining, organizing, and inventorying the plant nursery and propagating native plants. Additional general conservation activities may include maintaining trails and photo documentation of plants and habitats. The technician will be required to use, maintain, and inventory a variety of hand tools, including shovels, pruners, hand saws, machetes, and occasionally weed-eaters. All data collected in support of the wildlife monitoring, management, and restoration activities will be entered into survey forms and excel sheets. Occasionally the technician will attend meetings, events, and conferences with Bellows Environmental staff to help garner relationships with entities and communities beyond Bellows AFS. Please note some weekend days may be required for special events such outreach projects. This position is not-to-exceed 215 working days. Potential work activities may include but are not limited to the tasks below: Wildlife Management and Restoration Weekly endangered waterbird surveys and data upload Propagate, weed, monitor and fertilize native plants at on-site nursery Inventory and maintain tools, equipment, and supplies Assist with quarterly ant surveys Sea Turtle nesting surveys (seasonal) Seabird fallout season response (seasonal) Invasive plant removal in coastal dune system and wetland restoration sites Out-planting native plants in coastal dune and wetland restoration sites. Maintaining restoration sites through watering and monitoring Assist in organizing service projects and educational outreach Wildlife camera installation, monitoring, and data processing Developing invasive species response for coconut rhinoceros beetle This position is onsite, and the Natural Resources Technician must have reliable transportation to the site. The ECDP is unable to provide relocation or housing stipends. Full Consideration Date is 13 March at 12:00 am. Position Location: Bellows Air Force Station, HI Bellows AFS is located on the eastern coast of O’ahu and is used for military training and recreational opportunities for service personnel and their families. The 422-acre air force station supports beach, dune, and wetland environments that provide essential habitats for important plant and animal species, including Hawaiian hoary bats, Hawaiian monk seals, indigenous Hawaiian waterbirds and sea birds, and a variety of sea turtles. Major focal points of the Bellows AFS natural resources program include restoration projects and management of native and invasive species to promote biodiversity and environmental resilience at the station. Bellows AFS also supports a myriad of valuable cultural resources including an archaeological district listed in the NRHP with artifacts dating to early Hawaiian habitation. Requirements

  • Pursuing a B.S. in natural resources-, cultural resources-, ecosystem science-, or environmental policy-related field (at least a senior standing).
  • At least 3 months and no more than 3 years of relevant experience, which may include internships, fieldwork, seasonal jobs, volunteer work, or applied coursework.
  • Basic field data collection skills (eg. Vegetation surveys, wildlife monitoring, GPS-based mapping; academic or field school experience would count)
  • Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for new hires).
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.

Nice To Haves

  • Currently enrolled or holder of a Graduate Degree in natural resources-, biology-, or environmental science-related fields.
  • Experience using GPS equipment to collect field data.
  • Experience flora and/or fauna monitoring or management (specify taxa/ecosystem/regions of prior experience).
  • Experience with threatened and endangered/sensitive species monitoring and management.
  • Experience performing habitat restoration or invasive species management.
  • Experience with manual labor using powered tools and heavy equipment such as chainsaws, weed-eaters, mowers, tractors, ATVs/UTVs etc.
  • Proficiency with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro) and database management.
