About The Position

Pima County’s Conservation Lands and Resources Department is seeking a highly motivated and energetic individual to fill a part-time position as a Natural Resources Specialist. The position works within the Natural Resources Parks and Trails Division of Conservation Lands and Resources supporting Pima County’s commitment to conservation. The position will be part of a team that delivers land stewardship and supports business processes in a fast-paced environment. This position will support outdoor recreation programs in our Parks and Trails Division including trails and camping programs as well as special events. Responsibilities cover a range of support activities for the department related to natural and cultural resource protection, ecological restoration, biological and property monitoring, trails development, and outreach/event planning on Natural Resource parks, ranches, and open-space properties. Activities support the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan (SDCP), Multi-species Conservation Plan (MSCP), and other County environmental plans and initiatives. Duties may include online reservation system management, volunteer coordination, customer service interface, camp site inspections, report writing, project planning and implementation, assisting with invasive species treatments, collection and management of data, and event planning.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in natural resources management, restoration ecology, conservation biology, botany, environmental science, wildlife biology, rangeland management, or related field as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment AND one year of field work experience.
  • OR: Three years in a Pima County position involving natural resources management, environmental restoration, or other land-management activities.
  • Valid driver license is at time of application.
  • Valid AZ driver license is at time of appointment.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum one (1) year experience in outdoor recreation programming.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience in inventory and asset tracking related to outdoor programming.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience with working in a natural resource environment.
  • Experience with computer systems such as interactive, online applications, Excel, Word, and email.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with planning, implementing, monitoring, and reporting on projects related to resource protection, ecological restoration, habitat enhancement, historic preservation, and trails-based recreation on Pima County conservation properties
  • Assists with specific ecological monitoring activities and provides management recommendations for resource protection or enhancement
  • Monitors environmental factors affecting plants, animals, physical, and cultural features in assigned areas and actively participates in their preservation
  • Assists with general monitoring of Pima County conservation lands, infrastructure, trails, and facilities to assess resource conditions, identify threats, and determine impacts
  • Collects and manages geospatial data including implementing quality-assurance procedures and utilizes a variety of programs and tools, including geographic information systems software
  • Participates in invasive species control efforts, including monitoring and/or manual, chemical, biological, and cultural treatment methods
  • Assists in the development of resource management plans
  • Leads other staff, volunteers, and/or interns in park/program support activities
  • Answers questions from the public and interprets physical, natural, and cultural resource features found in the County’s parks, recreational areas, and open space lands
  • Assists with development and delivery of outreach activities for the department, including presentations to a variety of audiences
  • Patrols assigned parks and areas on foot, in motor vehicles, on bicycles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), and on horseback to monitor property and natural/cultural resources
  • Assists with special events planning and administration
  • May work with internal and external partners on work assignments and may assist specialized activities of one or more program areas
  • Inspects park structures, features, and equipment, investigates and documents suspicious conditions, and reports instances requiring further investigation
  • Maintains manual and computer-based records and submits routine, recurring, and special reports to management
