About The Position

The Natural Resources Specialist 2 works under the supervision of the Natural Resource Area Manager East on a variety of land management projects including but not limited to invasive plant management, implementation of restoration projects, and forest pest management. Will be based at the North Chagrin Management Center in North Chagrin Reservation; however, will work at all eastern reservations across Cleveland Metroparks.

Requirements

  • Must have completed two years of college courses with relevant course work and/or educational experience in natural resources, natural sciences, i.e., biology, geology, hydrology, etc., forestry, wildlife management, environmental science or related fields. At least six months of field experience, research experience, or other directly relevant job experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license under the laws of the State of Ohio for all positions listed in the addendum except for Natural Resources Management Crew.
  • Knowledge and practical outdoor work experience including plant, insect, mammal, or bird identification skills, farming, forestry, hydrology, aquatic ecology, civil engineering, GIS or a strong desire and aptitude to develop these skills. For research related positions, knowledge and experience in research methods is desirable.
  • Ability to read maps, follow written directions, and navigate through forest or wetland areas to remote locations.
  • Ability to walk up to 5 miles daily through challenging terrain including heavy vegetation, wetlands, and steep slopes.
  • Ability to lift and carry 40 pounds up to 8 hours per day.
  • Ability to work outdoors and tolerate the climate and conditions of natural areas typical of northeast Ohio (including heat, humidity, poison ivy, and biting/stinging insects)
  • Ability to work in adverse conditions including rain, high or low temperatures, high humidity, insects, and difficult terrain.
  • Energy and enthusiasm for field work.
  • Interest in learning or knowledge of Ohio flora and fauna and invasive species in the region.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in computer applications including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, and/or GIS and GPS and associated hardware is desirable

Responsibilities

  • Performs data entry and verification and assists in the development of reports and maps related to natural resource management or resource projects and activities as directed. Safely and competently operates and maintains equipment including but not limited to forestry measurement tools, portable data collectors and related equipment.
  • Keeps direct supervisor promptly informed of key/significant issues or concerns.
  • Carries out duties and responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner to maintain a safe work environment and surrounding area for oneself, co-workers and public. Responds to hazardous situations and/or potentially unsafe conditions by taking corrective action as capable and promptly notifying supervisory personnel.
  • Oversees natural resources-related volunteer projects.
  • Assists Natural Resources and other cooperating agency staff in other duties as apparent or assigned.
  • Invasive plant management control using chemical and non-chemical methods. Chemical treatment of non-native forest pests such as hemlock wooly adelgid.
  • Land management activities including deer exclosure maintenance, hydrologic restoration, native tree and shrub planting and propagation, and meadow management.
  • Entering and auditing management and treatment records in Fulcrum and QGIS. Records and maintains accurate, well-organized data in written and electronic format.
  • Safely operates and maintains equipment including but not limited to hand tools, spray equipment, ATV/UTV, chainsaws, brushcutters, tractors and implements, forestry measurement tools, portable data collectors, and other related equipment.
  • Records and enters observations into natural features database.
