About The Position

SUNY Ulster County Community College, a two-year branch of the State University of New York located ninety miles north of New York City in the Catskill Mountains, is currently accepting applications for a Natural Resources Environmental Coordinator. The role of the Natural Resources Environmental Coordinator (NREC) is to assist New York City Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Natural Resources Division (NRD) in developing and implementing natural resources projects by coordinating interns to aid in conducting applied research and management in areas including invasive species, ecological restoration, wetlands, wildlife studies, aquatic ecology, and forestry on New York City water supply watershed lands and waters. This geographic area covers parts of the Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountain regions of New York (Ulster, Sullivan, Delaware, Greene, Dutchess, Putnam, and Westchester counties).

Requirements

  • Must have a clean driving record of five or more years and be willing to drive a 15-passenger van for up to 4 hours a day in remote areas without reliable cell service
  • Must have a B.S./B.A. or M.S./M.A. in Biology, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies or a related field
  • Must be willing to learn new skills
  • Must be able to communicate effectively
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions and hike long distances under sometimes difficult conditions, such as extremely hot or cold temperatures, over difficult terrain such as steep slopes and on boats or in waist-deep water
  • Must be able to carry heavy equipment
  • Must be comfortable speaking in public
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Commitment to community college goals and objectives of providing quality programs and services for culturally, socio-economically, ethnically, and academically diverse students and students with disabilities; personal qualities to work effectively and with sensitivity in a multicultural environment; awareness of and commitment to the needs of non-traditional and/or re-entry students with diverse abilities and interests.

Responsibilities

  • Recruiting and hiring interns at SUNY Ulster through on-campus events and email communication, and guest lecturing or teaching laboratories in related courses
  • Working with faculty and staff at SUNY Ulster and DEP to oversee the development of a student research poster and student presentations of their research at conferences, on campus, and at the DEP offices
  • Transporting interns to and from field locations throughout the watershed
  • Managing timekeeping for up to 10 interns and other administrative tasks related to reimbursements and purchasing
  • Coordinating with NRD staff on multiple specific research and management objectives for which the NREC and interns may aid.
  • Surveying for invasive species, biological control organisms, conducting removal projects where appropriate, and associated data entry
  • Conducting kick-net sampling for stream macroinvertebrates
  • Assisting in forest inventories, identifying and recording species information, size classes and condition in research plots and associated data entry
  • Assisting in wetland research, monitoring, and delineations
  • Conducting outreach on the above topics to members of the public at outreach events and the development of relevant outreach materials
  • Assisting with expanding a volunteer program to do invasive species removal, native species planting, improving pollinator habitat, other stewardship tasks, and citizen science projects
  • Assisting with other natural resources management program duties as assigned
