About The Position

The duties of this position are performed remotely at district locations, as well as our central office in Salem. In addition, the ability to report to Salem and district field locations is required when business or operational needs are dependent on onsite activities. The base location for this position will be Salem. The position may be "housed" in a field ODF office, this will be determined upon hire. What we are looking for: As the Forest Roads Support Specialist, you will provide forest road management and maintenance technical support to both State Forests and the Federal Forest Restoration programs.

Requirements

  • Three years of natural resource experience in areas of forest management, forest road engineering, etc. At least one year of the experience must be at a technical or professional level performing activities in a natural resource program such as researching and analyzing data, conducting investigations, applying pertinent laws and regulations, OR coordinating and monitoring project activities, AND
  • A bachelor's degree in forestry or closely related natural resource field, or three additional years of related (pertinent) experience.
  • OR A master's degree in areas of forest management, forest road engineering, etc., will substitute for up to one year of the required experience.
  • Note: Driver’s License Check - This position requires the operation of a state vehicle for the purpose of conducting official State business. If your license is from outside Oregon, you must submit at least a three-year court/DMV printout. If you have an Oregon driver’s license, a record check will be conducted on the top candidate to ensure a valid license and acceptable driving record.

  • Ability to make professional and technical decisions regarding managing road systems including transportation planning, drainage and fish passage structures, construction, improvement, maintenance, and repair.
  • Skilled in preparing, reviewing, and enforcing contracts for road construction, maintenance, and/or timber sales, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and requirements.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance, develop training materials, and mentor staff on forest road related practices.
  • Experience leading projects, coordinating with multiple stakeholders, and resolving technical and operational issues effectively.
  • Proficiency in developing and maintaining GIS data, analyzing spatial information, and producing maps and reports for planning and operations.
  • Working knowledge of collaborative forest management and the relationships between federal, state, and private forest management.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with the State Forests Engineer to provide technical and policy guidance on road and harvest system related activities.
  • Ensure all work order contracts across the State Forest program are efficiently and properly planned and administered.
  • Act as a technical resource for contract inspections and compliance regarding forest road management and related activities.
  • Support the FFR program as needed including completing and reviewing road designs, reconstruction/maintenance plans, contract package preparation, and contractor administration and oversight for road improvement, reconstruction, maintenance, and decommissioning projects.
  • Provide project management support to improve business operations, resolve road related issues, and/or develop guidance, procedures, or recommendations for policies.
