About The Position

The Camp Natural Resource Instructor/Medical Coordinator involves aspects of being both a Natural Resource Instructor and a Camp Medic. The NRI/Medical Coordinator will work under the supervision of the Camp Director and Camp Coordinator. The position involves teaching courses at a residential camp ranging from first aid education, hunter/firearm safety, fishing, forestry, ecology, fish and wildlife management, and outdoor recreation. This position also directly supervises and supports a cabin with 8-10 campers, ages 12-16 on a weekly basis, and is responsible for overseeing the medical needs of the camp program. Please note: This is a residential position in either Castleton or Woodbury, VT. Requirements

  • Must hold a valid certification as a Wilderness First Responder, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic, or Advanced Paramedic.
  • Minimum one (1) year of college, preferably in Natural Resources, Wildlife, Environmental Education, or similar field, OR successful completion of the GMCC Junior Counselor program.
  • Must be able to provide general guidance and leadership to campers.

Responsibilities

  • Mentoring campers regarding medical and personal matters
  • Dispensing medications to campers
  • Ensuring health regulations are adhered to
  • Assisting all staff members in carrying out camp goals, objectives, and the Vermont State Fish & Wildlife Department's mission.
  • Live near with campers and be available for adolescent counseling, medical needs, and helping each camper adjust to other campersand camp life.
  • Encourage and lead each camper in their participation in camp activities and interactions with other campers.
  • Teach courses independently and co-teach all courses with other staff members (teach 3-5 classes a day).
  • Oversee and interact with cabin of 8-10 campers. Facilitate wake up and nighttime cabin activities. Sleep in the back of the campercabins during designated weeks.
  • Check with the Camp Director and Junior Counselor Director to see if any work projects need to be completed before takingpersonal time off when not teaching classes.
  • Be 'on call' to needs and responsibilities of camp and the campers 24 hours a day.
  • Be a positive role model and leader for the campers and volunteer staff.
  • Deal with medical and discipline issues in an appropriate and sensitive manner.
  • Cooperate fully with the Camp Director, JC Director, other Instructors, volunteers, and all Vermont Agency of Natural ResourcesStaff.
  • Monitor the health and safety of residential campers and staff (80 people/week).
  • Dispense/administer prescribed medications and treatments to campers. Designate/train another staff member each week todispense camper medications on your day off.
  • Maintain the camp infirmary and medical supplies/medications. Create med kits for each building/staff member and check in withstaff to make sure they are being restocked throughout the summer.
  • Communicate to other staff/kitchen staff and JC's about pertinent medical information on Sunday when campers arrive.
  • Accompany sick or injured campers to the hospital or ER and prepare accident and illness reports on proper SOAP note form.
  • Ensure appropriate procedures are followed regarding medical issues and that camp programs meet appropriate health and safetyregulations.
  • During camper registration on Sundays, check in with parents to collect medication, health insurance information/medicalcertificate, and any pertinent medical information regarding that camper
  • On Fridays or if camper leaves early, medication must be returned to camper's guardians in graduation packet or before camperleaves camp property.
