About The Position

Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations. We are hiring for one full-time, permanent position located in Salem, Oregon. What you will do: In this role, you will lead Oregon’s Wildlife Integrity Program to protect native species by managing invasive threats, shaping statewide strategies, and promoting public awareness and reporting. Responsibilities include coordinating early detection and rapid response for invasive species, developing policies and strategies to maintain wildlife integrity, and providing expertise to stakeholders and the public. More specifically, this position will: • Develop and coordinate goals, objectives, strategies and procedures for non-native species impacts and ensuring wildlife integrity . Evaluate and recommend policy and rule changes necessary to improve the Wildlife Integrity Program. Lead and coordinate the approval of special permits to possess, import, buy, sell, exchange and transport “prohibited species”. • Provide technical support on all issues concerning invasive species prevention, detection, control and/or eradication as outlined in Oregon’s State Wildlife Action Plan. Ensure department staff are kept informed of current developments relating to nonnative and invasive species. • Serve on statewide and inter-state work groups associated with invasive species prevention and management. This position will also require an ATV Safety Education Card (to be obtained within first 6 months of hire), occasional use of a firearm, and occasional use of a state-issued credit card (SPOTS), for work-related purchases. Requirements

  • Six years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program
  • At least one year of the experience must be at a technical or professional level performing activities in a fish or wildlife program such as researching and analyzing data, conducting investigations, applying pertinent laws and regulations, or coordinating and monitoring project activities
  • A Bachelor's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework, and three additional years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program. At least one year of the experience must be at a technical or professional level performing activities in a fish or wildlife program such as researching and analyzing data, conducting investigations, applying pertinent laws and regulations, or coordinating and monitoring project activities
  • A Master's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Master's degree in biological/ecological sciences will substitute for up to one year of the required experience.
  • A Doctorate degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Doctorate degree in biological/ecological sciences will substitute for up to two years of the required experience.
  • Applicants will be required to complete the U.S. Department Homeland Security's I-9 form confirming authorization to work in the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in wildlife species management (ornithology, mammalogy, herpetology).
  • Experience working with, and knowledge of, invasive species to the Pacific Northwest area.
  • Excellent writing skills and the ability to work with a variety of constituents.
  • Ability to organize projects and make oral presentations to the Commission and the public.
  • Familiarity with administrative rules and the rulemaking process.
  • Basic working knowledge of computers.
