About The Position

The primary purpose of this position is to promote the understanding of history in the Albemarle region of northeastern North Carolina. This position will assist in implementing the museum's educational programs and collaborate with the museum’s exhibit programming.

Requirements

  • Must be able to work Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm. However, Tuesday – Saturday weekly schedule may be required.
  • Must be able to work some evening and weekend hours with the possibility of travel that may require overnight.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and speak for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift at least 25lbs with or without accommodation.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, crouch, bend, and other forms of movement for the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to understand complex problems and collaborate to explore alternative solutions.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Biology, Botany, Conservation, Education, History or Zoology from an appropriately accredited institution AND four years of museum or related work, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated experience in planning, developing, and/or presenting educational programs and tours to accommodate large group visitation and/or public visitation.
  • Demonstrated experience with the use of technology and interactive learning processes.
  • Demonstrated experience speaking in public and communicating effectively to a variety of audience needs.
  • Demonstrated considerable knowledge of museum practices and American, Southern, and North Carolina history and material culture.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and implements daily educational programs and tours to the public and scheduled groups of all ages.
  • Works with Education Chief to develop new and innovative educational programming and interpretive goals.
  • Works with Education Chief to coordinate educational outreach to schools, organizations, and regional events, including virtual and social media programs.
  • Works with collections and exhibit teams to develop and pair educational programs with museum exhibits and history presentations.
  • Provides written materials suitable for publications, such as newspapers, museum magazines, social media, and program calendars.
  • Assist in recruiting and training volunteers and staff as museum docents to conduct educational programming with training agendas, including junior docents.
  • Greets visitors and provides museum information at reception desks.
  • Represents the museum in a variety of program offerings and public functions.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain an effective professional working relationship with museum staff, government officials, academic and public advisors, museum board, volunteers, and the public.
