About The Position

As a Municipal Research analyst in the Municipal Fixed Income group, you will be part of a team that manages municipal bond investments for separately managed client accounts and bond funds. You will conduct fundamental credit analysis and relative value assessments on public municipal debt issues to determine suitability for client accounts. You will work closely with the Head of Municipal Research, the Municipal Research Team and Municipal portfolio managers to develop actionable investment ideas within your assigned geographies and sectors. Complexity of analytical responsibilities will increase commensurate with demonstrated expertise. The successful candidate will be proactive, inquisitive, and team-oriented with a strong interest in the municipal fixed income market.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 2 years’ industry experience, or in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 6 years’ higher education and/or work experience, including a minimum of 2 years’ industry experience.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills, advanced accounting skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to convey complex credit issues clearly and concisely
  • Familiarity with basic artificial intelligence concepts and eagerness to increase proficiency
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and proactive
  • Collaborative, team-oriented

Nice To Haves

  • CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) or progressing toward obtaining CFA designation.
  • Knowledge of Bloomberg and Perform/CreditScope helpful but not required.
  • Graduate degree in finance, public administration or related field strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze investment grade municipal credits through in-depth fundamental credit a nalysis.
  • Provide timely and insightful credit and relative value opinions on municipal bond investment opportunities.
  • Evaluate appropriateness of new investment opportunities for total return and laddered portfolio strategies.
  • Provide written credit opinions of issuers, incorporating financial statement analysis, economic/market trends, and sector developments.
  • Review offering memoranda for suitability of security structure and bondholder protections.
  • Monitor existing portfolio holdings.
  • Follow market and policy developments within assigned geographies/sectors.
  • Formulate and communicate investment theses within assigned sectors.
  • Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
  • Understand and adhere to the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies, and controls in accordance with the Company’s Risk Appetite.
  • Complete other related duties as assigned.
