About The Position

This position is restricted to current Maryland State Police employees. Please check Worcester Co. when completing locations in which you will accept employment. Also please note that FAILURE TO LIST ALL EXPERIENCE AND ANSWER ALL SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONS SPECIFICALLY AND ACCURATELY may cause the candidate to be rejected. The main purpose of the job is to coordinate all aspects of Controlled Dangerous Substances (CDS), Latent Print and Toxicology evidence from scheduling, receiving, and releasing same. Also, this position provides all clerical/secretarial support for the MSP Forensic Sciences Division, Berlin Regional Laboratory which includes MSP Forensic Scientist Supervisors and Forensic Scientists.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Two years of experience with administrative functions or handling/inventorying evidence.
  • Candidates may substitute the possession of an Associate of Arts degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Administration classifications or Administrative, Clerical or Office Services specialty codes in the Administrative support field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
  • Employees will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
  • Employees in this classification may be required to testify in a court of law as an expert witness about the chain of custody and laboratory procedures.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to random drug testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulation 10.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to call out 24 hours a day and; therefore, are required to provide a telephone number where they can be reached.
  • In accordance with Public Safety Article, Section 2-204 (b) (6) of the Annotated Code of Maryland, candidates for positions in this classification will be subject to an initial drug screening, a physical examination, submission of a DNA sample, and a complete criminal background investigation, to include a polygraph examination before permanent appointment can be made. A criminal conviction may be grounds for rejection of the candidate.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with chain of custody or evidence handling procedures
  • Experience in customer service in regards to working with both civilian and sworn law enforcement personnel in local, state and/or federal agencies
  • Experience in data entry with electronic database systems

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the security and integrity of evidence within the Unit and when, if necessary, testify in a Court of Law as to the Chain of Custody for evidence and procedures utilized by the Forensic Sciences Division.
  • Receive and release evidence daily to many law enforcement agencies as well as corresponding personnel within the Division for analysis
  • Conduct thorough inspections of evidence submitted to the laboratory to ensure that it is properly packaged
  • Other clerical duties to support the Berlin Laboratory
