About The Position

The MRI Technologist at Northwestern Medicine is a role focused on patient safety and producing high-quality diagnostic images within the MRI environment. This position requires adherence to the organization's mission, vision, values, Code of Ethics, and Corporate Compliance Program, as well as all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory standards. Key responsibilities include maintaining patient safety throughout the entire MRI process, from screening and preparation to monitoring and post-procedure care. The technologist is expected to produce diagnostic-quality MRI images using approved protocols, applying professional judgment to optimize image quality and resolve challenges. This involves reviewing images for diagnostic adequacy and initiating corrective actions when necessary. The role also entails administering contrast in accordance with policy, including screening for contraindications, establishing IV access when required, monitoring patients, and responding to adverse events. The MRI Technologist is responsible for the safe operation of MRI equipment, ensuring the imaging room is always ready, and identifying and reporting equipment performance issues. They coordinate exam flow, prioritize time-sensitive studies, and maintain accurate and timely documentation in EPIC and Visage for exam setup, image routing, result availability, and charging accuracy. The position emphasizes upholding quality and safety standards, including MRI safety, infection prevention, and protecting patients, visitors, and team members. Furthermore, the technologist is expected to ensure a positive patient experience and support departmental initiatives aimed at improving relationships, reliability, efficiency, and growth, while also being prepared for additional responsibilities aligned with patient care and department needs.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Radiology Technologist Program
  • American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) OR American Registry of MRI Technologist (ARMRIT)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)

Responsibilities

  • Maintains accountability for patient safety throughout the imaging process, including screening, preparation, monitoring, and post-procedure care.
  • Produces diagnostic-quality images using approved protocols and professional standards.
  • Apply professional judgment within approved protocols to optimize image quality and address imaging challenges.
  • Reviews images prior to exam completion and initiates corrective action when diagnostic adequacy is not met.
  • Administers contrast in accordance with policy, including screening for contraindications and patient monitoring (as applicable).
  • Operates imaging equipment and maintains imaging room readiness.
  • Identifies equipment performance issues and initiates follow-up through established service processes.
  • Coordinates exam flow and prioritizes time-sensitive studies.
  • Maintains accurate and timely documentation in medical record and image archive system, including exam set-up, image routing, result availability and charging accuracy.
  • Adheres to organizational values, ethical standards, and compliance requirements.
  • Consistently upholds all applicable quality and safety standards within diagnostic imaging, such as radiation safety, MRI safety, Infection prevention measures safe practices (as applicable to the role) to protect self, patients, visitors and team members.
  • Ensures a positive patient experience throughout care delivery.
  • Supports department initiatives to improve relationships, reliability, efficiency, growth.
  • Supports additional responsibilities aligned with patient care and department needs.

  • Performs MRI safety screening, including implant and foreign body evaluation, and ensures appropriate clearance prior to exposure to the magnetic field.
  • Enforces controlled access and safe practices within the MRI environment.
  • Produces diagnostic-quality MRI images using approved protocols and professional standards.
  • Applies professional judgment within approved protocols to optimize image quality and address imaging challenges.
  • Reviews images prior to exam completion and initiates corrective action when diagnostic adequacy is not met.
  • Administers contrast in accordance with policy, including screening, IV access when required, monitoring, and response to adverse events.
  • Safe Operation of MRI equipment and maintains imaging room readiness.
