Movement, Health and Wellness Specialist/ PE Teacher
About The Position
Shining Stars Montessori Academy is seeking a Temporary Physical Education (PE) Lab Teacher to support our Health & Wellness–focused PE and Montessori Movement programming for students in PK3–6th grade. PE ‘ Lab’ classes emphasize physical fitness, coordination, self-regulation, cooperation, and healthy lifestyle habits through developmentally appropriate, movement-based learning. Shining Stars Montessori Academy Public Charter School offers lab classes—school-based enrichment experiences rooted in Montessori principles. The PE/Lab Teacher is a member of the Academic/Lab team and works under the supervision of the Principal to deliver instruction that is culturally responsive, developmentally appropriate, and aligned with OSSE requirements for students in PK3–6th grade. For the 2025–2026 school year, the Lab Teacher will serve Primary, Lower Elementary, and Upper Elementary classrooms, supporting learners ages 3–12. This is a temporary position and may be filled as either a contracted role or a temporary staff appointment, based on school needs.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Experience teaching physical education, movement, health, sports, or youth fitness preferred
- Experience working with elementary-aged children
- Commitment to developmentally appropriate, child-centered instruction
Nice To Haves
- Montessori experience preferred but not required
Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver engaging PE lessons aligned to DC Health & Wellness and Montessori Movement principles
- Promote physical fitness, body awareness, coordination, balance, and cooperative play
- Adapt activities for diverse ages, abilities, and learning needs
- Maintain a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment
- Set up and break down equipment and learning spaces daily
- Reinforce school-wide expectations and routines
- Support school-day activities including recess, arrival/dismissal, and field trips
- Maintain basic lesson documentation and required student records
- Assist with school day activities (recess, lunch, field trips, arrival/dismissal)
- Maintain paper and electronic student files
- Perform additional school and administrative duties as needed
