The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. The centers provide campus-based direct services and supports at 13 centers located throughout the state. Performs motor vehicle maintenance and repair work, including repairing or replacing worn or broken parts; performing preventive maintenance activities; and servicing motor vehicle equipment and related gasoline, diesel, or alternative fuel engine-powered equipment.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the construction, repair, maintenance, and operation of buildings, equipment, and utility systems; building materials; and welding procedures and techniques.
  • Skill in equipment and electronic maintenance, in selecting appropriate tools and equipment, and in troubleshooting situations to determine appropriate actions to resolve problems.
  • Ability to organize preventive maintenance programs; to apply proper methods, techniques, and procedures in the maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment; to interpret drawings, diagrams, and blueprints; to communicate effectively; and to serve as a lead worker providing directions to others. For all levels
  • Knowledge of motor vehicle maintenance, repair techniques, and safety practices and principles.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment.
  • Ability to follow instructions, to make repairs, to use tools and equipment, and to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to locate and diagnose defective mechanical operations.
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state driver’s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation or GED or completion of an accredited vocational/technical program in automotive repair or a related field.
  • Experience in the repair or maintenance of motor vehicles.
  • Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct and HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
  • All State Supported Living Center employees are subject to Random drug testing.
  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility.

Responsibilities

  • Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
  • Performs routine motor vehicle maintenance such as repairing or replacing tires, hoses, belts, and filters. Performs minor repairs to suspension and driveline components such as replacing universal joints, shocks, struts, and bushings.
  • Performs minor body repair work and touch-up painting. Performs safety and emission inspections. Repairs or replaces brake components. Services, refuels, and change oil in vehicles.
  • Cleans and maintains shop, equipment, and tools. Performs related work as assigned.
  • Exchange, rebuilding, and overhaul motors, transmissions, differentials, carburetors, and other motor vehicle components and systems.
  • Check and repair electrical and cooling systems.
  • Perform oil and filter changes, transmission service, brake and suspension repair, tire installation and repair, wheel alignments, air conditioning diagnosis and repair, state vehicle inspections, and other scheduled maintenance.
  • Perform minor engine tune-ups and make required adjustments on motor vehicles’ motors and engines.
  • Perform motor vehicle body repair work and touch-up painting.
  • Test motors and engines for satisfactory performance.
  • Install after-market accessories and equipment.
  • Maintain records of work performed and parts used.
  • Operate electronic or computerized diagnostic equipment and other specialized tools and equipment using computer-based technical manuals to identify, isolate, adjust, and verify malfunctions and system and component failures.
  • Tear down inboard and outboard gasoline boat motors or marine diesel engines and reassemble the motors.
  • Maintain and repair heavy construction equipment
  • Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
