Modeling & Simulation Intern

Indium CorporationNew Hartford, NY
6h$17 - $23Onsite

About The Position

JOB SUMMARY: The intern will support Indium’s Technology Assessment group by developing simulation ready alloy material property definitions (“material card” requirements + template) to enable electronics reliability modeling. Work includes identifying required mechanical properties (elastic, plastic/strength, time/temperature dependent, and fatigue/damage), converting test/literature data into simulation inputs, and fitting appropriate constitutive models with validation and sensitivity studies. The intern will also document a repeatable solder assembly simulation workflow (model objectives, meshing, boundary conditions, solver strategy, fatigue metric extraction, and workflow standardization) and provide an internal playbook plus a final presentation.

Requirements

  • All interns must be active college students who have completed their freshman year and are enrolled in courses for the Fall semester of 2026.
  • Pursuing a BS in Electrical Engineering or related discipline (Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics).
  • Exposure to FEA modeling through coursework, research, or internships; familiarity with ANSYS Mechanical and/or electronics reliability modeling concepts preferred.
  • Programming skills (Python and/or C++) for scripting, automation, and analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute an independent technical project; prior research internship experience preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • familiarity with ANSYS Mechanical and/or electronics reliability modeling concepts preferred.
  • prior research internship experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Define required mechanical properties for modeling (elastic/plastic, time/temperature dependent, fatigue/damage) and document test data needs.
  • Convert raw experimental data into simulation ready inputs; support constitutive model selection and parameter fitting.
  • Create and document a material card structure suitable for FEA use.
  • Develop best practice guidance for solder simulation workflow: model fidelity, meshing strategy, boundary conditions, and numerical stability.
  • Document fatigue metric extraction, lifetime modeling hand-off considerations and maintain reusable templates for internal use.
  • Provide weekly progress updates and deliver a final written report and presentation summarizing results, recommendations, and next steps.

Benefits

  • health, dental, and vision insurance
  • PTO
  • retirement plan
  • volunteer opportunities
