About The Position

This position is a hands on role and is responsible for providing oversite for the Model machine shop for safety, technical leadership, planning, and throughput to achieve breakthrough production results. They will oversee and coordinate all activities, ensuring the timely and accurate creation of tools, parts, and models from various materials such as metal and plastic. The role is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and efficient work environment and ensuring all models, tooling, and parts meet established specifications and quality standards.

Requirements

  • 2-year degree from an accredited university or vocational school in Mechanical, Engineering related technical field OR a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • A minimum of 10 years of machine shop experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years in a lead role.
  • Experienced with 3D modeling and CNC programming and set-up for Muli-axis CNC’s (4, 5, 7 axis)
  • Proficient knowledge of CNC operating systems (Mastercam, SolidCam)
  • Experience with design: AutoCAD, Solidworks, NX etc
  • Proficiency in computer skills, including MS Office Suite.
  • Excellent leadership and team management abilities.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills and ability to interpret needs
  • Effective interpersonal and good written and verbal communication skills.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the assigned model shop team in performing their duties, regularly assigning tasks, providing instructions, and checking completed work, while offering feedback as needed.
  • Oversee the operation, upkeep, and maintenance of machine shop equipment, including lathe, mill, shear, brake, band saw, grinder, CNC, and other equipment as assigned.
  • Coordinate work schedules to meet production and engineering deadlines.
  • Monitor shop activities to ensure personnel are properly trained and adhere to all safety protocols.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on tooling and equipment according to the maintenance plan.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and resolving model shop machine-related issues.
  • Purchase necessary equipment, tooling, and supplies with required approvals.
  • Provide guidance, prioritization, and escalation of model shop jobs.
  • Ensure products meet quality standards and specifications.
  • Collaborate with tool design and engineers for tooling, fixtures, and process improvements
  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and productivity.
  • Maintain Safety, 6S, housekeeping, and equipment maintenance protocols.
  • Provide input to department manager on team members performance
  • Performs initial injury/near miss incidents investigations/reports for assigned areas.
  • Proficient with MasterCam, CamWorks, Fusion 360 or other programming software is a MUST (A candidate highly skilled in the efficient use of an alternate programming software similar to MasterCam such as CamWorks, SolidCam, etc. may be considered).
  • SolidWorks proficiency is a MUST
  • Proficient with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Proficient with Metrology (CMM, in-line gaging, surface plate, air gaging, etc.), and GD&T application
  • Train and mentor team members.
  • Partner with EHS to develop, implement, and enforce safety measures.
  • Communicate any issues or delays in production to the management team.
  • Assist in inventory management and supply ordering.
  • Lead continual improvement initiatives within the machine shop.
  • Provide additional supervisory coverage for other areas of the shop as needed.
  • Load programs.
  • Analyze G-code programs, adjust speeds, feeds, tooling and operating sequences as needed
  • Develop CNC methods, process prints and writes operator plans, describing in detail the methods established
