About The Position

Chatham Animal Clinic is offering a 2-4 week mixed animal externship for veterinary students interested in small animal, small ruminant, exotic, and equine medicine. This hands-on experience is designed to immerse you in the realities of true mixed practice—where no two days look the same and learning never stops. What You’ll Experience • Hands-on exposure to dogs, cats, small ruminants (goats, sheep, etc.), exotics, and horses • Preventative care, lameness exams, dentistry, reproductive work, and emergency cases • Farm and barn calls where mud, dust, and creative restraint are part of the charm • Client education for owners who are deeply invested in their animals • Case discussions and mentorship with experienced mixed-animal veterinarians • A realistic look at balancing hospital medicine, field work, and equine care Who This Externship Is For • Veterinary students currently enrolled in an AVMA-accredited program • Interest in mixed animal, equine, small ruminant, and/or exotic practice • Willingness to learn, ask questions, and jump in when appropriate • Comfort working outdoors and adapting when a “quick check” turns into an afternoon case • A sense of humor and appreciation for good boots Why Chatham Animal Clinic • Supportive 7-doctor team with a strong mentorship culture • Brand new 17,000 sq ft hospital and equine barn • Excellent equipment and vehicles to support field and barn calls • A practice where your skills are valued across species • A learning-focused environment that encourages growth and curiosity

Requirements

  • Veterinary students currently enrolled in an AVMA-accredited program
  • Interest in mixed animal, equine, small ruminant, and/or exotic practice
  • Willingness to learn, ask questions, and jump in when appropriate
  • Comfort working outdoors and adapting when a “quick check” turns into an afternoon case
  • A sense of humor and appreciation for good boots
