The role is part of the In-Space Systems business unit, which is focused on addressing two of the most compelling challenges in spaceflight today: space infrastructure and increasing mobility on-orbit. In this role, you will be the accountable Mission Lead Systems Engineer (LSE) for a Blue Ring spacecraft Mission. The position is within the In-Space Systems business unit reporting to the Mission Systems Engineering, Integration and Test (MSEIT) Sr Director. In this role, you will collaborate closely with the Blue Ring Spacecraft Engineering team, Program Management Office, Ground & Spaceflight Operations team, Mission Design & Analysis teams, and the Customer. The selected candidate requires strong engineering and collaboration skills to ensure the successful delivery of Blue Ring to support our customers’ missions. This position requires 10+ years’ systems engineering experience, including previous experience as an LSE in an official capacity. You will also need to have proven previous successful experience working directly with customers to establish relationships and build trust within the program. You will be working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment so you will need to be decisive and flexible. You will contribute to innovative solutions, while demonstrating leadership, technical judgement and competence, and a passion for the highest technical standards partnering with the business unit and engineering leadership to achieve program goals with acceptable risk.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a B.S. in an engineering or related field
  • A minimum of 10 years of Systems Engineering experience
  • Proven experience as a Lead Systems Engineer in an official capacity on spacecraft development programs
  • Experience in full life-cycle development of spacecraft and / or satellite flight systems, including integration & test, launch and mission operations support
  • Ability to forge strong positive relationships with US Government customers and maintain customer connection throughout program execution
  • Active US Government TS/SCI security clearance

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing, deploying, and supporting multiple complete flight systems or systems of similar complexity
  • Previous experience with spacecraft product lines and multi-payload spacecraft is strongly preferred
  • Highly organized teammate with excellent technical written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven track record to operate with cohesive and effective teams and drive rapid decision making within those teams
  • Experience with development in mission and safety-critical environments
  • Leadership experience in a space development environment
  • Experience with Design for manufacturing / cost is preferred
  • Ability to travel and/or temporary duty in support of growing tempos of production and operations
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships

Responsibilities

  • As a Mission Lead Systems Engineer, you will be the accountable technical lead for a customer mission contract.
  • You will work closely with the Mission Program Manager (PM), Chief Engineer, and Mission SEIT lead to coordinate across the Blue Ring organization to ensure successful execution of the contract.
  • Ownership of mission-level reviews, with accountability for the successful execution of reviews, both internal and external.
  • Providing engineering leadership and coordination of systems engineering activities throughout design, development, verification, delivery, and operation as it relates to the mission.
  • Root cause analyses and corrective actions for major failures at the mission level, working with functional managers in addressing issues.
  • Facilitation of technical trades and advising teams on novel solutions for flight and ground architectures as required.
  • Collaboration across the organization on interfaces and mission integration activities.
  • Represent the company and project with key customers and partners.
