About The Position

Students who are part of Team Mingus will serve as ambassadors for the Berklee Mascot Program. This team will drive school spirit on campus and provide positive engagements during the academic year. Students will have the opportunity to serve as Mingus the Jazz Cat and handler. Both roles require different expectations and responsibilities. Members of Team Mingus will be paid $16.45 per hour of work. Mingus Duties and Responsibilities include: Appear at events and programs throughout the academic year. Interact with event attendees with enthusiasm, positivity, and excitement. Perform bits and stay within character while interacting with students, faculty, and staff. Be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time in a mascot suit. Handler/Team Member Duties and Responsibilities include: Possess knowledge of various social media platforms and engagement strategies, as well as an ability to present Mingus in various formats. Develop new ways for students to engage with Mingus the Jazz Cat throughout the year. Collaborate with campus partners, faculty, and administration to provide the best engagements with the Mingus Team. Serve as an ambassador for the life of Charles Mingus and reflections from his experiences. Speak to why Charles Mingus was chosen to be honored by name and why we have a Jazz Cat as a mascot. Preserve the identity of Mingus! We fully expect you to keep your involvement on Team Mingus a secret and NEVER tell friends when you are working an event. Doing so is grounds for being asked to leave Team Mingus. To Note: Being Mingus is rewarding, but NOT glamorous. It’s sweaty and sometimes stinky. It gets VERY hot and can be physically demanding. It can feel awkward at first, but being Mingus takes courage! Please note: In order to be Mingus you must be at least 5’7” (171 cm)

Requirements

  • Current student at Berklee College of Music or Boston Conservatory at Berklee.
  • Enrolled at least half-time in a degree, diploma, or certificate-seeking undergraduate or graduate program.
  • Summer is the only semester in which a student can maintain employment without being enrolled. In this case, the student must be pre-registered for the upcoming fall semester. This exception does not apply to fall or spring semesters.
  • Have a valid United States Social Security Number (SSN).
  • Remain in “valid” Visa status as applicable.
  • A minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA. Students in their first semester can work, even though they do not have an official GPA until the completion of their first semester.
  • Federal Work Study student may apply.
  • In good disciplinary standing.
  • Must be located in the U.S.
  • Applicants must attend one of the scheduled Student Leader Information Sessions.
  • In order to be Mingus you must be at least 5’7” (171 cm)
