Requirements

  • High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities can be acquired.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for precise measurement and mixture of breast and donor milk and formula daily.
  • Responsible for daily management of breast milk supply for the respective patient population.
  • Routinely ensure proper preparation for the timely thawing of breast and donor milk.
  • Adhere to hospital guidelines for storage, temperature monitoring, and expiration dates, daily.
  • Utilize specific mathematical skills and appropriate spreadsheets to calculate and measure additives in the milk, i.e., protein, iron, and calories, daily.
  • Calculate and divide milk into individual feeds while assuring proper adherence to milk supply management and waste avoidance, daily.
  • Accurately receive, identify, store, verify, and prepare all human and donor milk feedings as ordered by the providers caring for hospitalized infants.
  • Process, store, and prepare all formula feedings and other products as ordered by the providers caring for hospitalized patients.
  • Maintain a sanitary, well-supplied environment in the nutrition room, including the milk and formula preparation area, as well as milk refrigerators and freezers, following the procedures of the hospital and the nutrition room.
  • Prepare feedings accurately according to established written formulations following pre-established feeding preparation procedures and adhering to quality control standards and aseptic technique.
  • Use correct and accurate techniques to measure powders and liquids.
  • Verify new or questionable feeding orders with the care team for accuracy and obtain standardized recipes as needed.
  • Use clinical information systems to obtain patient feeding orders and to print labels and production lists.
  • Clean and sanitize work surfaces in the Nutrition Room before and after each feeding preparation. Clean the utensils, equipment, and storage areas used in the Nutrition Room.
  • Calculate new formulations or standardized recipes manually or with software.
  • Assist in training other employees in formula preparation and proper handling techniques, as needed.
  • May complete unit/department-specific duties as outlined in department documents.
