About The Position

The Milieu Therapist is an integral member of the interdisciplinary Behavioral Health team at UPMC Somerset, supporting individuals who are navigating crisis and managing symptoms related to mental health conditions. This role focuses on creating and maintaining a safe, therapeutic, and recovery-oriented environment through meaningful engagement, structured activities, and compassionate care. The ideal candidate brings patience, understanding, strong safety awareness, and a positive, supportive attitude to help patients through challenging periods in their lives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a Human Services field such as Social Work, Psychology or Counseling from an accredited College or University
  • Other fields of study may be considered with coursework of at least 12 credits in Human Services
  • Must be physically capable of providing direct total physical care to unpredictable behavioral health patients as necessary, including lifting, supporting, running towards or away from areas where problems are occurring and pushing and pulling equipment such as wheel chairs
  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse
  • Act 34 Clearance

  • Previous experience with group facilitation

Responsibilities

  • Participate as an active member of the interdisciplinary care team, contributing to therapeutic planning and patient-centered care
  • Facilitate and/or co-facilitate psychoeducational and therapeutic groups and activities based on patient needs
  • Coordinate and support patient groups, unit activities, and therapeutic programming
  • Complete 1:1 meetings with assigned patients to assess current status and support progress
  • Provide clinical interventions appropriate to assessed patient needs
  • Encourage and assist patients with activities of daily living
  • Maintain effective milieu management that promotes safety, structure, and positive patient experiences
  • Manage crisis situations using positive, therapeutic approaches
  • Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment at all times
  • Complete ordered patient observations in accordance with all guidelines
  • Accompany patients to out-of-building activities and appointments as assigned
  • Document accurately and timely in the medical record per established policies
  • Maintain ongoing communication with appropriate staff and participate in interdisciplinary meetings
  • Perform assigned duties in a timely, professional, and productive manner
  • Maintain required competencies, utilize up-to-date care practices and technology, and attend required unit-based or institute-wide in-services (minimum of one annually)
