About The Position

The position of Milieu Manager is responsible for overseeing and maintaining a safe, structured, and therapeutic milieu under the direction of the RN, LPN, and Administration/Leadership. This role ensures that unit operations, patient supervision, observation and rounding requirements, and safety protocols are consistently followed, and that patients, families, and guests are treated with dignity and respect. The Milieu Manager provides direct leadership and supervision to Mental Health Technicians (MHTs), functions as the primary operational lead for the milieu, and serves as a key liaison between frontline staff and clinical leadership.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Bachelor’s degree in behavioral health, human services, nursing, or related field preferred (high school diploma required).
  • Supervisory or leadership experience in a behavioral health or healthcare setting preferred.
  • Combination of education and relevant work experience may be considered.
  • Previous experience in a psychiatric healthcare facility, with direct experience working with behavioral health and/or substance use disorder populations, is required.
  • Valid driver’s license and a favorable Motor Vehicle Report (MVR), along with proof of insurance when using personal or hospital-owned vehicle.
  • CPR certification and Handle With Care (HWC) certification within 30 days of employment and prior to any patient contact.
  • Completion of additional age-specific and job-specific training within 30 days of employment as required.
  • May be required to work flexible hours and overtime.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day oversight of the therapeutic milieu, ensuring a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment at all times.
  • Act in full capacity of MHT and fulfill the primary and immediate daily needs of the patient unit.
  • Provides leadership, coaching, and real-time guidance to MHTs to ensure compliance with observation, rounding, and safety standards.
  • Perform morning MHT group and reinforces therapeutic engagement expectations across all scheduled groups.
  • Support and help ensure patients attend all other therapeutic groups throughout the schedule and be present if needed.
  • Assist in connecting patients to the Patient Advocate as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with patient observation and rounding requirements, including coverage during breaks and shift transitions.
  • Ensure patient safety through verifying and/or completing Patient ID wristbands and patient photos.
  • Facilitate patient visitation, virtual or otherwise, in accordance with facility policy and safety guidelines.
  • Monitor unit dynamics and patient behavior to proactively identify and escalate safety concerns.
  • May involve light administrative support such as printing and filing.
  • Help to mentor and on-board new staff members by participating in and supporting orientation.
  • Provide input and documentation related to staff performance, coaching, and accountability as needed.
  • Serve as the chair/co-chair of the employee engagement committee and work to bring all committee plans together.
  • Participate in incident reporting, safety reviews, and quality improvement initiatives related to milieu operations.
  • Represent the program professionally and positively within the facility and community.
