About The Position

The Pennington School is seeking a Middle School science teacher as a temporary leave replacement for the 2026 spring term, starting on or around mid-February until June 12, 2026. The ideal candidate for this position is a highly engaging and passionate Middle School educator who will teach Life Science and Earth Science for Grades 6 and 7. Candidates should have a record of proven effectiveness in teaching science. Candidates should also possess a developmental understanding of and appreciation for working with students in this age group (Grades 6 through 8). The ideal candidate will embrace a student-centered approach to learning and guide students to work toward personal and collective goals in skills, habits of mind, and understanding. Class sizes typically range from twelve to sixteen students. This position is located at our 55-acre campus in Pennington, NJ. The ability to walk up and down stairs is required. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education or science
  • Experience teaching at the middle-school level
  • Strong desire and ability to work with middle school students
  • Knowledge of pedagogical strategies for teaching middle school students
  • The ability to implement and help create a highly engaging, interactive, experiential science program is required.
  • Ability to differentiate teaching in order to work with a range of learning styles
  • Ability to create a safe environment in which students can take risks and be themselves
  • Ability to use technology (including a SmartBoard) in highly effective ways to enhance teaching and learning
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Teach students in courses including, but not limited to, sixth- and seventh-grade Life Science and Earth Science
  • Teach an Elective course in the fourth quarter
  • Lead a Grade 6 advisory group
  • Create personalized, student-centered, and highly engaging learning experiences that have a lasting impact
  • Demonstrate warmth, respect, humor, teamwork, and industry in interactions with students, parents, and colleagues
  • Develop and practice cultural competence in teaching and community life
  • Elicit individual excellence in every student, moving the student toward personal and collective goals in skills, habits of mind, and understanding
  • Meet with advisees and their parents in March for parent/advisor/advisee conferences
  • Write narrative comments for report cards at the end of the school year
  • Additional responsibilities for this position may include leading a club, or coaching a team.
  • Attendance at School events that may include occasional weekends and evenings is also required, including (but not limited to) a one-night end-of-year student trip.
