About The Position

The Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic schools serve more than 40,000 students in 150+ elementary and high schools in Cook and Lake counties. It is one of the largest private school systems in the United States. Its schools have received 96 Blue Ribbon awards from the U.S. Department of Education over the past 10 years. This is for the 2026 - 2027 school year. The Teacher is a qualified professional educator who meets the requirements to teach in a Catholic school in the Archdiocese of Chicago.  As a teacher in a Catholic school, the Teacher acts as a representative of the Catholic Church to the students, both as a role model and through the various tasks, actions and other responsibilities assigned to the Teacher.  The Teacher is a ministerial employee because of the Teacher’s role as both a representative of the Church and as a communicator of the Church’s message to the children entrusted to the Church’s care. The Teacher is hired by and is directly accountable to the principal. The Teacher agrees to abide by the educational policies and procedures of the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Office of Catholic Schools as well as comply with the educational policies and procedures of the local school. The Teacher cooperates with the principal and staff in providing an educational environment that promotes the ministry of Catholic education.   The Teacher is a representative of the Archbishop of Chicago, effectuating his ministry of Catholic education and the religious teachings and doctrine of the Catholic Church at the level of the local school.  St. Athanasius School is seeking a dedicated and student-centered full-time Resource Teacher to support middle school students in grades 5–8. This position plays a vital role in ensuring that all students are supported academically, socially, and emotionally in alignment with our mission to love, learn, and lead. Position Overview: The Resource Teacher will provide targeted academic support, coordinate student services, and serve as a key liaison between families, teachers, and high schools. This individual will manage student support plans, guide the high school application process for 8th-grade students, and collaborate closely with faculty and administration to meet the diverse needs of learners.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education (Master’s degree or specialization in Special Education preferred)
  • Valid teaching license (Illinois certification preferred)
  • Experience working with middle school students and diverse learning needs
  • Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and maintain confidentiality
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Catholic education Preferred Qualifications
  • Practicing Catholic (preferred, required for religion teachers)
  • Must meet compliance with safe environment requirements
  • Must hold Bachelor’s degree
  • Must have valid state licensure for the grade/subject area (preferred, not required)
  • Must complete Catholic identity formation training

Nice To Haves

  • Experience writing and implementing accommodation or support plans
  • Familiarity with high school admissions processes
  • Background in intervention strategies and differentiated instruction

Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of students with Student Support Plans (SSPs) and Student Accommodation Plans (SAPs)
  • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized student plans
  • Provide direct academic support to students in grades 5–8, both in small groups and individually
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to support differentiated instruction and student success
  • Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress and support strategies
  • Serve as a liaison to area high schools, supporting families through the 8th-grade application and transition process
  • Coordinate documentation and ensure compliance with school and (if applicable) diocesan guidelines
  • Participate in student support meetings and contribute to a positive, inclusive school environment
