Middle School History Teacher

St. Luke's SchoolNew Canaan, CT

About The Position

St. Luke’s School, a secular (non-religious), college-preparatory day school serving grades 5 through 12, seeks a Middle School History Teacher to teach 7th grade American History. The Middle School History Department strives to develop young historians who move beyond surface-level stories and learn to grapple with evidence, causation, and the complexity required by historical thinking. We aim to foster classrooms where students learn to think about ideas rigorously and express their curiosity openly, guided by the values of civil discourse, with the goal of understanding rather than winning. The ideal candidate is collaborative, energized by a middle schooler's energy, and committed to teaching civil discourse as both an intellectual discipline and a civic responsibility. Our history classrooms aim to model institutional neutrality while emphasizing the importance of analyzing arguments and distinguishing between historical interpretation and political advocacy. We are looking for an educator who inspires students to become historical thinkers and writers, not just note-takers. They share a passion for learning, a deep comfort with valuing multiple perspectives and competing interpretations, and the patience to help students sit with ambiguity rather than look for easy answers. We want someone who teaches students that a position is only as strong as the evidence behind it, and who models that instinct every day in the classroom. These are habits of mind that extend well beyond the history classroom, and we take our responsibility to help students develop them seriously. The St. Luke’s Educator Competencies form the foundation of our professional work, and the school’s Strategic Plan provides direction. Located in New Canaan, Connecticut, St. Luke’s attracts families from more than 35 towns across Connecticut and New York. A combination of challenging academics and truly exceptional community support distinguishes St. Luke’s and encourages our students to go above and beyond their own expectations. St. Luke’s offers an inclusive environment where differences in race, culture, and personal beliefs are embraced as assets that enhance education. St. Luke’s prides itself on being a forward-thinking school where students hone their own distinct leadership skills - developing a strong moral compass, the commitment to serve, and the confidence to lead. St. Luke’s School is an equal opportunity employer. St. Luke’s School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, pregnancy, national origin, ancestry, citizenship, age, marital status, disability, veteran status or sexual orientation or any other basis prohibited by law with regard to hiring, terms and conditions of employment or educational programs.
