About The Position

The choral music educator is responsible for teaching choral music education to pupils in grades 6-8 using state and national standards as a basis for a creative curriculum. This educator ensures that students engage in enjoyment, appreciation, understanding, creation, and performance of music through a variety of planned experiences which include singing, listening, movement, creating, performing, responding and connecting to and through music. In addition, this educator performs other duties directly related to this job description as defined and in conjunction with the building principal and curriculum specialist and leads the staff of the school in the improvement and appreciation of music for the school community.

Requirements

  • Possesses or qualify for a Virginia Collegiate Professional license with specific endorsement in the area to which assigned.
  • Possesses outstanding knowledge and skill in the assigned instructional area and demonstrates enthusiasm for teaching and the learning process.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of instructional strategies and skills related to scientifically-based research and its implementation.
  • Proficiency in public speaking and written communication to express and/or exchange ideas.
  • Emotionally mature, objective and sensitive to people and their concerns.
  • Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, families, administration, staff, co-workers and community agencies.
  • Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Familiarity with racial equity and inclusion frameworks.
  • Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Respects the worth, dignity and individual differences of others.

Responsibilities

  • Teaches skills in music performance, understanding/appreciation, creation, and exploration in music to students in grades 6-8 in alignment with state and national standards.
  • Plans/executes a balanced music program and organizes class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished.
  • Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the music curriculum to the needs of each student.
  • Encourages students to develop individual musical skills to the greatest extent possible through local, district, and statewide organizations and experiences.
  • Utilizes diverse repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages, cultures, skill levels, and interest of all students.
  • Maintains care/responsibility for school-owned music and musical equipment to minimize loss or damage.
  • Evaluates each student’s musical growth, performance, and musical understanding.
  • Assesses each individual’s contribution to the performance of the group.
  • Engages with elementary, middle and high school music educators to ensure a comprehensive K-12 music education for all students.
  • Selects appropriate curriculum through music, books and instructional aids to enhance learning and requisitions for instructional supplies as necessary.
  • Cooperation with building principal and staff in providing musical programs for the school and community. Examples include but are not limited to school assemblies, open house, parent meetings, and evening concert programs.
  • Communicates with parents, students, and school staff on individual student’s progress.
