About The Position

The Nurse Practitioner position provides professional and highly trained medical care at the Fort Lewis College Student Health Center (SHC) as outlined below. NPs provide quality, affordable, and convenient healthcare and treatment to FLC students. It is essential for this position to be flexible and adaptable to a changing work environment and maintain professional relationships with all students, faculty, staff, and colleagues.

Requirements

  • Possesses a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing and Master’s of Science in Nursing.
  • Possesses a current Colorado NP Board Certification, Colorado APN License, DEA License, Colorado RXN License, Colorado RN License, CPR certification, and be adept at IV insertion and lab draws.
  • Comfortable with a fast-paced environment which requires multi-tasking.
  • Proven experience providing exellence in customer service.
  • Experience using Electronic Medical Record systems.
  • Experience maintaining confidential patient medical information.
  • Ability to recognize deficiencies in knowledge and seeks consultation and communication with supervising medical providers to provide safe and effective nursing care.
  • Proven positive and professional working relationships following directives of effective medical care.

Responsibilities

  • Makes independent decisions about health care needs of patients within the scope of training and experience.
  • Provides Primary Care to patients.
  • Collaborates with supervising medical providers on as-needed basis by phone, personal contact or chart review.
  • Perform daily medical tasks while maintaining good working relationships with the Student Health Center staff, the Health Services Departments, the greater Fort Lewis College including all students, faculty, and staff, and the health care community in La Plata County and State CDPHE.
  • Follow the medical standard of care guidelines as directed by their Accredited Board Certification.
  • Work within the scope of Nurse Practitioner training and experience.
  • Focus on improving patient care quality, ensuring compliance with regulations, and supporting the SHC department's goals.
  • Providing direct patient care services, including assessments, planning, and evaluation, aswell as ordering and administering diagnostic tests, and treatment plans.
  • Serving as a liaison between nursing staff, patients, families, and healthcare providers, fostering effective communication and collaboration.
  • Ensuring adherence to healthcare regulations, standards, and accreditation requirements, including quality and patient safety protocols.
  • Provide excellence in customer service to students.
  • Observe/assess and report symptoms and conditions of patients, record vital signs, educate patients on health issues, administer medications, provide point of care testing, and implements the nursing process.
  • Works closely with Counseling Center staff and consulting psychiatric NP and/or psychiatrist with referrals in both directions, and to initiate medications by protocol based on consultation.
  • Evaluates mental health issues, initiates and monitors use of medications in the student population as needed, with plans for continued consultation for medication management.
  • Ensures strict confidentiality of patient medical information.
  • Provide travel appointments to students providing researched data including CDC guidelines for travel vaccines: Yellow Fever, typhoid, and polio, and medications for malaria prevention and traveler’s diarrhea treatments.
  • Maintain IV skills to administer IVF replacement when needed.
  • Draw labs on patients and perform point of care testing on them if needed.
  • Process labs according to Labcorp/ARUP Guidelines including researching correct specimen tubes/containers, centrifuge, use of LabCorp interface within EMR to route and print proper requisitions and insurance information.
  • Follow established guidelines/protocols to provide safe and effective medical care.
  • Promote healthy lifestyles through best practice and researched standards.
  • Knowledge of proper ICD-10 and CPT coding and visits, diagnosis, and procedures.
  • Practice flexibility and perform other jobs as needed when short-staffed.
  • Work closely with the Health and Well-being and Student Engagement Departments to provide wrap around care to FLC students.
  • Strive to use good judgement and reasoning in all aspects of the position.
