About The Position

We have an exciting opportunity for a Microsoft 365 Engineer at UL Research Institutes and UL Standards & Engagement, based in our Evanston, IL office. The Microsoft 365 Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the Microsoft 365 environment. The Microsoft 365 Engineer will ensure the seamless integration and optimal performance of Microsoft 365 services for the organization. Requirements

  • Deep, hands-on expertise with Microsoft 365 messaging and collaboration services, including Exchange Online, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint Online, and OneDrive for Business.
  • Strong understanding of Microsoft 365 security, compliance, identity, and data protection capabilities.
  • Proven ability to act as a technical owner and solution lead, engaging stakeholders and driving solutions from concept through implementation.
  • Experience providing technical leadership and oversight to Managed Service Providers operating in a run model.
  • Proficiency in PowerShell scripting and automation for Microsoft 365 administration.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex, cross-platform issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional IT teams and business stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills in a dynamic, enterprise IT environment.
  • Comfort operating within a Build vs Run or Product-plus-MSP support model.
  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience administering and engineering Microsoft 365 in an enterprise environment.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing Microsoft 365 platform standards, governance models, and major configuration changes.
  • Experience overseeing or working with Managed Service Providers supporting Microsoft 365 operations.
  • Strong experience with identity and access management concepts, including Entra ID (Azure AD).
  • Experience with backup, recovery, retention, and eDiscovery capabilities within Microsoft 365.

Nice To Haves

  • Microsoft certifications in Enterprise Administrator Expert (MS-102) and/or Identity and Security certifications (e.g., SC-300) are preferred
  • Experience supporting large-scale collaboration environments and enterprise messaging platforms preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the technical owner and primary point of contact for Microsoft 365 messaging and collaboration solutions, partnering with stakeholders to gather requirements, facilitate implementation, and provide ongoing updates throughout the lifecycle.
  • Design, build, and deploy Microsoft 365 solutions and major enhancements across Exchange Online, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business, and related services.
  • Define, implement, and maintain enterprise standards, architectures, and guardrails for Microsoft 365 messaging and collaboration services.
  • Oversee a Managed Service Provider (MSP) responsible for day-to-day Microsoft 365 run operations, providing technical direction, prioritization, and escalation support.
  • Establish and manage a clear build-to-run transition model, ensuring solutions are operationally ready with appropriate documentation and runbooks.
  • Implement and maintain Microsoft 365 security, compliance, and data protection controls, including DLP, retention, access, and external collaboration policies.
  • Stay current with Microsoft 365 roadmap updates, features, and releases, planning and implementing upgrades and new capabilities as appropriate.
  • Monitor platform health, service performance, and usage trends, identifying optimization opportunities and addressing technical debt.
  • Develop automation and scripting solutions (e.g., PowerShell, Graph API) to improve platform efficiency, governance, and scalability.
  • Collaborate with Security, Infrastructure, Automation, Adoption, and other IT teams to integrate Microsoft 365 with enterprise systems and workflows.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
