About The Position

The Director of Perfusion Services at Mass General Brigham is a key leadership role within the Heart and Vascular Institute, responsible for overseeing all perfusion-related clinical operations, education, and research across the Mass General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. This position requires a visionary leader who will collaborate with surgical and cardiology leadership to ensure excellence in patient care, innovation in perfusion technologies, and the development of future leaders in the field. Under the direction of the Chief of Cardiac Surgery and the Senior Administrative Director, the Director of Perfusion Services leads the administrative, technical, and operational functions of the department. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and hospital regulations, oversees accreditation, staffing, training, and daily operations, and maintains high standards of patient care and safety. The Director must be well-versed in Joint Commission and HIPAA standards, exercise sound judgment in prioritizing tasks, and ensure adequate resources to support clinical needs. They provide leadership to the perfusion team, operate extracorporeal circulation equipment during procedures, and manage the administration of blood products and solutions. The role emphasizes efficient use of personnel and resources while fostering professional development and a quality-driven, patient-centered environment. This role may expand over time to include other sites or affiliations that utilize MGB perfusion services in the future.

Requirements

Requires B.A. degree with science courses: biology, physiology, chemistry and physics.
Requires completion of an accredited Perfusion Program prior to certification and at least one year as a cardiovascular perfusionist prior to certification.
Requires successful completion of both written examinations to become certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion, and through continuing education programs, annual renewal of Board Certification.
Requires proven skills in operational and human resource management
Licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Division of Professional Licensure of Perfusionists.
Prior experience in a supervisory or leadership role managing perfusionists and a perfusionist program required.
Adult/Pediatric Perfusion Experience 8-10+ years required and Management Experience 5-7 years required
Knowledge of membrane, adult and infant/pedi surgery, centrifugal pumps, roller pumps, isolated limb perfusion, intra aortic balloon pump, heart and lung transplantation, and various myocardial protection techniques such as cold crystalloid and blood, warm continuous blood, cold fibrillation/arrest, and blood gas interpretation.
Orders products for cardiac perfusion team through cardiac surgeon equipment requests.
Works with material managers and detail people for product and equipment costs and inventory levels.
Maintains fiscal responsibility for program including personnel and non-personnel expenses.
Assists in budget preparation and management

Collaborates with the Chief and Administrative Director to oversee departmental organization and strategic planning.
Manages financial operations including budgeting, equipment planning, and resource utilization.
Oversees documentation, policy development, and compliance with hospital and regulatory standards.
Communicates institutional updates and policy changes to staff.
Participates in meetings, seminars, and educational activities.
Leads recruitment, onboarding, and performance management of perfusion staff.
Designs orientation and competency programs for new and existing team members.
Develops and enforces standardized protocols and scheduling, including 7-day OR coverage and on-call rotations.
Fosters professional growth and succession planning within the team.
Aligns perfusion program strategy with Cardiac Surgery and OR goals.
Manages workload metrics to support staffing decisions.
Leads program design, development, and expansion initiatives.
Supports fiscal management across human and equipment resources.
Maintains strong communication across clinical teams and ensures continuity of care.
Trains senior perfusionists to manage operations in the Director’s absence.
Initiates and contributes to research projects.
Oversees point-of-care testing including training, management, and quality control.
Prepares and operates extracorporeal circulation equipment during cardiac and other surgical procedures.
Administers and monitors prescribed solutions and blood products during procedures.
Adjusts equipment settings based on lab reports and surgical requirements to maintain homeostasis.
Monitors and calibrates various devices used in cardiovascular procedures.
Maintains knowledge of pharmacological interventions and bypass circuitry.
Maintains records of all cardiovascular bypass procedures and participates in intra-aortic balloon pump operations.
Provides perfusion services across multiple specialties including Transplant, Oncology, and Vascular Surgery.
Participates in ECMO program and supports training and policy development.
Organizes and oversees research projects and maintains current procedure protocols.
Establishes and maintains quality control standards for testing and personnel.
Promotes training programs for residents, fellows, and visiting physicians.
Collaborates with medical industry and other institutions to integrate evolving technologies.
Advises research committees and supports intra-operative plasmapheresis as needed.
Consults with other specialties to improve perfusion technologies and practices.
Supports legal compliance and risk reduction through accurate record keeping.
Provides direct supervision and is available for real-time support and guidance for both perfusion teams (~36 FTEs)
Creates work schedules and on call schedules for both sites
Approves time off, overtime, leaves of absence, and weekly payroll.
Oversees perfusionist staff certification, licensure, and continuing education compliance.
Conducts regular performance evaluations and competency assessments.
Collaborates with leadership to resolve employee issues.
Supports professional development through continuing education, goal setting, and learning opportunities.
Authorizes travel for educational events.
Establish performance metrics and conduct regular evaluations.
Ensures safety and calibration of all perfusion equipment.
Maintains departmental compliance with institutional, OSHA, HIPAA, and JCAHO guidelines.
Identify opportunities for program expansion and innovation.
Foster partnerships with affiliated institutions and external collaborators.
Participate in philanthropic efforts to support perfusion services.
Promote research initiatives in perfusion science and technology.
Develop educational programs for trainees and continuing education for staff.
Collaborate with academic partners to advance the field.
