About The Position

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine, at the University of Colorado has an opening for a MFM sonographer between 0.5 to 0.9 FTE to provide support to the freestanding Maternal Fetal Medicine clinic in Fort Collins, CO. This position reports directly to the MFM Practice Manager and indirectly to the Medical Directors and the MFM Business Services Program Director. The role involves working Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, with no on-call obligation. Each MFM clinic has two to three sonographers onsite daily, with each sonographer covering one room and performing an average of 8 patient scans per day. The clinics utilize GE Voluson22 or GE Voluson E10s with ViewPoint reporting software that interfaces with EPIC for the EMR system. The practice adheres to AIUM guidelines for ultrasound protocols and is recognized as an AIUM accredited ultrasound practice. CU MFM fosters a work culture where sonographers are highly respected, with a dynamic team including fetal surgeons, MFM physicians, PAs, NPs, genetic counselors, an OB endocrine physician, diabetes educators, sonographers, a nurse navigator, medical assistants, and schedulers. There is strong collaboration between MFM physicians and sonographers, with sonographers presenting cases and sharing their perspectives after each scan. As part of an academic institution, CU MFM emphasizes teaching and ongoing education, hosting a monthly Education Series for staff and a biennial fetal imaging ultrasound conference in partnership with Children’s Hospital Colorado, which includes presentations and hands-on training.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree from an accredited institution in a field of study related to the work assignment
  • 2-3 years of ultrasound technician experience within MFM specialty
  • Cardiac Echocardiography certification (for Echo Cardio Certified MFM Sonographer)
  • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted on a year for year basis.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship.
  • Fetal Echo Training within 12 months of hire
  • Registered as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS)
  • Registered as a Technologist (RT) and certified in Sonography (S) by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
  • State licensure if required by law
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross healthcare provider level CPR certification
  • Must be able to work in-person
  • Must be able to travel/cover to alternate locations as assigned
  • Maintain all required licensure and certifications for position
  • Maintain all required continuing education requirements
  • Compliance with vaccination and medical surveillance policies of affiliated healthcare facilities or clinics if working, visiting, or volunteering there
  • Enrollment in occupational health medical surveillance program if working in certain research areas or performing safety sensitive job duties

Nice To Haves

  • 4+ years of ultrasound technician experience in an outpatient setting within MFM specialty

Responsibilities

  • At the direction of a qualified physician or advance practice provider (APP), perform a variety of procedures requiring independent judgment and initiative in the utilization of ultrasonic equipment for the diagnosis of disease in humans.
  • Review patient history and physician's orders in order to perform prescribed study.
  • Monitor, record, and communicate patient condition as appropriate.
  • Collaborate as needed across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including patient transfer, discharge, referral, and attend to all age-related physical, spiritual, and psychosocial needs.
  • Evaluate learning needs of patient and/or family and provide patient/family education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances.
  • Educate patient regarding procedures, equipment, and exam to ensure patient's understanding and cooperation.
  • When ordered, prepare and administer contrast media and/or medications within scope of practice.
  • Select appropriate exposure factors and imaging parameters
