About The Position

Responsible for replacing, repairing, testing, and calibrating residential and commercial water meters throughout the city. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS : Repair, remove, replace, raise, set and lower 5/8” through 10” meters. Replace, lower, raise and modify meter boxes and lids. Repair and replace ¾” through 2” curb cocks, gate valves and copper or poly water services. Installs, repairs, and maintains pipes for water lines. Loads and unloads materials and equipment. Drives light trucks and equipment to and from job site. Uses laptops, tablets, and other digital devices for documentation. OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS : Excavates and backfills trenches, using hand tools. Constructs forms and mixes/pours concrete. May stack/rearrange pipes and materials. May paint buildings, pipes, and other equipment. May clean/sweep floors, walls, and grounds. Work requires being onsite to perform essential functions. Performs other related duties as assigned. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES : Must have the ability to use hand tools and small power tools. Must have basic computer knowledge. Must be able to read mapping of the city, including GIS maps. Must be able to frequently bend, stoop, twist, turn, crouch, and kneel. Must be able to work in all types of terrain (grass, ditches, wooded areas, gravel, etc.) in and around construction zones and residential, commercial, industrial and rural areas in all types of weather conditions (rain, snow, cold, heat, etc.) Must be able to communicate using a two-way radio and/or cellular device. Must be able to work independently and without supervision, and work safely without injury to self and others. Must be able to read, write, carry out oral and written instructions, and understand English and communicate with management, customers, and subordinates effectively and respectably. Must be able to maintain record keeping, paperwork and use a field app that assigns jobs to each person. Must have the ability to work with the public in a respectable, efficient manner and provide exceptional customer experience in troubleshooting and answering questions that the public may have limited to the scope of your role (meters, how to read them, etc.) Must work over regular hours to complete job. Must respond to emergency calls after regular working hours when needed and respond within 30 minutes. Must comply with all City and departmental policies and procedures and meet attendance and punctuality guidelines. Must have good attendance. Must be available to work a rotating on-call duty, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Must have reliable transportation and telephone and be close enough to Tyler to respond within 30 minutes of receiving a call. Must be able to lift 100 lbs, carry 50 lbs and be able to push and pull 80 lbs. Must be able to work in conditions that include extreme cold and heat, temperature changes, humidity, heights, vibration, wetness, dryness, confined spaces, noise 80-dB and over, fumes, mists, gases, dust, caustics, chemicals, allergens, detergents, mechanical hazards, moving objects, and exposure to burns.

  • Must have one (1) year of job-related experience.
  • Must Possess a TCEQ Class “C” Water Distribution License OR have the ability to obtain one within one (1) year.
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver's license with clear driving record.

  • Six (6) months of college, technical, or vocational education preferred.
