About The Position

This Meter Reader position, under the general supervision of a Crew Leader, involves the daily reading of meters on an assigned route, with the route being subject to change. Key responsibilities include accurately recording all findings such as bad meters or straight connects, maintaining records of meters read, and reporting any meters that are inaccessible. The role also requires checking that meters and visible plumbing are correctly installed and functioning, reporting defects to the supervisor, and ensuring consistency in meter readings. When not engaged in meter reading, the incumbent will perform duties typically associated with a maintenance worker, which includes making water taps, inspecting equipment for proper operation and safety, responding to emergencies (including being on-call), and performing minor equipment repairs and adjustments. The position necessitates daily contact with the public, requiring simple courtesies, tact, and diplomacy. It also demands the physical ability to walk for extended periods under various working conditions.

Requirements

  • Requires a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Position requires considerable knowledge of the subject to perform effectively, with little direct supervision, in work situation which are varied or which have deviation and irregularities.
  • T.C.E.Q. Class “D” License (If employee does not have this license, he/she will receive one grade lower and work assignments will be lower skilled until license is obtained).
  • Requires a valid Texas driver with a satisfactory driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Reads meters on the assigned route.
  • Records all findings, such as bad meters, straight connects, etc.
  • Keeps record of meters, read and reports meters not accessible for readings.
  • Check to see that meters and visible plumbing are correctly installed and functioning properly.
  • Reports any defects to immediate supervisor for further action.
  • Check to determine consistency of meter readings.
  • Performs duties of maintenance worker when not reading.
  • Makes water taps.
  • Inspects equipment for proper operation and safety prior to operating.
  • Responds to emergencies when required; (subject to on call).
  • Make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Ability to walk long periods of time under varying working conditions.
  • Performs other related tasks as required.
