About The Position

Mentor Teachers of Record will help to develop corps members in the knowledge, skills, and judgment they will need to become ambitious beginning teacher leaders who build strong relationships with students and lead them to meaningful outcomes. A Mentor Teacher of Record provides direct coaching, feedback, and thought partnership to a group of corps members and utilizes a variety of coaching strategies – including live coaching, lesson planning support, and observation and debriefing – to ensure corps members plan for and deliver rigorous instruction; facilitate a positive and productive classroom culture and environment; and build strong relationships with students and other educators. The Mentor Teacher may also facilitate pre-scripted learning experiences to help Corps Members synthesize their learning. Candidates for this role have prior coaching experience with adult learners. Mentor Teachers work with the program leader or coach in their region and work in person at a regional Practicum summer school.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree Required
  • 2+ years of classroom teaching experience, and coaching & leading adult learners
  • Quantifiable success as a classroom teacher, with demonstrated success in reaching outcomes
  • Experience working with new teachers in professional development settings, including observing other teachers, giving feedback, and facilitating group discussions
  • Must have a current teaching license in the state in which you are working/teaching
  • Available for the entire length of the program, and able to perform job duties in person
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the vision for instructional practices
  • Previously demonstrated skills and belief in building relationships across lines of difference, connecting to adult learners, and creating and contributing to a strong culture
  • Strong organization, time management, and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to make adjustments and be flexible in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment
  • Committed to developing themselves, others, and the broader Pre-Service community through intentional engagement, reflection, and feedback
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a way that builds relationships with corps members and staff
  • Commitment to giving and receiving feedback

Responsibilities

  • Spring Training Internalize Pre-Service structures, including but not limited to the scope of this role, the schedule, and the approach to coaching
  • Familiarize yourself with content and Teacher Leadership sessions in order to understand the development that Corps Members will engage in, and apply that to your coaching
  • Familiarize and customize pre-scripted sessions to be delivered during Pre-Service
  • Familiarize yourself with the student curriculum CMs will leverage during the summer
  • Corps Member Training and Practicum Serve as the Teacher of Record within a classroom, which includes general tasks such as submitting daily attendance, keeping a record of student progress, and taking the lead in the event of an emergency in the classroom, etc.
  • Mentor and coach a group of corps members by providing regular observation, feedback, and thought partnership.
  • Monitor, observe, and provide daily feedback to corps members in one one-on-one and small group settings.
  • Support corps members in creating, implementing, and adapting learning environment plans and daily lesson plans, as well as support corps member development in curriculum planning and implementation.
  • Support the MD, Learning and Development, in evaluating corps members’ progress toward summer outcomes.
