About The Position

Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC's 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year. Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Mental Health Specialist III for the Child & Adolescent Services - Children's Transitional Residence of University Behavioral Healthcare. Provides daily care and supervision to children residing in the Children's Transitional Residence. Participates as a member of a milieu treatment team in carrying out a residential mental health care program and related services to children (ages 5-11 years) at CTR. Demonstrates competence in recognizing the unique needs and behaviors of children.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of full-time paid experience in an appropriate mental health field or two (2) years of college majoring in a relevant mental health field plus one (1) year of full-time relevant experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • CPR certification/First Aid certification or qualify to obtain within six (6) months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Interacts with child/patients (ages 5-11 years) in a therapeutic manner.
  • Takes initiative in engaging children and families in a tactful manner as observed by supervisor and as indicated by feedback from patients and team members.
  • Assess children's (ages 5-11 years) interpersonal behavior and participation and interest in their environment in accordance with established Center policies as monitored by supervisor.
  • Formulates and implements intervention that facilitates child well being as monitored by supervisor.
  • Documents assessments, interventions and interactions with children in accordance with Unit policies as reviewed by supervisor.
  • Plans and implements appropriate and therapeutically effective milieu therapy activities from children (ages 5-11 years) as indicated by feedback from team members and by supervisory review.
