Job Summary The Mental Health Counselor is responsible for managing the day-to-day mental health components of client treatment plans. This role works closely with the consulting psychiatrist and collaborates with a multidisciplinary treatment team to ensure comprehensive, high-quality, and client-centered care.

Requirements

  • Current NYS licensure as LCSW, LMSW, or LMHC
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in an OASAS-certified facility, hospital emergency department, ICU, detox program, or related behavioral health setting
  • Demonstrated experience treating mental health conditions within a behavioral health or substance use treatment environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities
  • Effective crisis intervention skills
  • Ability to maintain healthy and appropriate professional boundaries
  • Proficiency in computer use for documentation and communication
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Professional demeanor with the ability to represent the agency positively

Nice To Haves

  • Five (5) or more years of experience in a hospital-based mental health setting, private practice, or nonprofit organization
  • Experience working in a detox setting and/or substance use disorder treatment program
  • Familiarity with OASAS regulations, Meicaid requirements, insurance regulations, referral source reporting, Quality Improvement Program (QIP) processes, and the therapeutic process
  • Proficiency in the use of EMR software, specifically CARS EMR (EPIC)

Responsibilities

  • Provide research-based mental health assessments for new admissions
  • Deliver case management services for clients presenting with mental health needs
  • Facilitate psychoeducational groups ranging from small group coaching to didactic sessions
  • Implement existing curricula to engage clients in goal setting and developing treatment goals for mental health with the Primary Addiction Counselor.
  • Maintain fidelity to the treatment model, with particular emphasis on the Matrix Model, Family Educational Model, and other evidence-based mental health and addiction treatment practices
  • Participate as a collaborative team member in Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) meetings
  • Maintain regular communication with team members, external providers, and staff to ensure coordinated service delivery
  • Document assessments, group notes, individual session notes, and clinical visit summaries in EPIC EMR in accordance with regulatory, governmental, and funding requirements
  • Maintain accurate case records and statistical data for management reporting, billing, and treatment evaluation
  • Assist in completing initial evaluations within required timeframes as defined in OASAS Part 820
  • Assist in the development and augmentation of comprehensive treatment plans addressing psychiatric issues and co-occurring substance use disorders with the Primary Addiction Counselor.
  • Recommend appropriate mental health treatment interventions and services based on client needs
