About The Position

The Mental Health Counselor provides direct professional counseling services to Middlesex College students, supporting their mental health and overall well-being. This role delivers culturally responsive, trauma-informed care through brief, solution-focused interventions, crisis management, and outreach. Modalities include individual, group, and multi-person counseling, crisis intervention, and psychological assessment. The Counselor collaborates with campus and community partners to ensure equitable access to mental health resources and uphold best practices in student support.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or related field
  • New Jersey Licensure (LCSW, LPC, LCADC, LMFT) in good standing
  • Two (2) years of clinical experience of providing mental health counseling
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations and address equity in mental health care
  • Excellent problem-solving and organizational skills

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced counseling certifications
  • Experience as a counselor in a postsecondary educational environment
  • Experience working with LGBTQ+ students and other underrepresented groups
  • Three (3) years of clinical experience
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records and various computer software programs (Microsoft Office Suite, Ellucian-Colleague, Medicat, or similar)

Responsibilities

  • Provides in-person and/or virtual, culturally and trauma-informed counseling services, including individual, group, and multi-person sessions.
  • Conducts initial intake evaluations, psychological assessments, and short-term counseling for a broad range of mental health concerns.
  • Triages and manages immediate crises and psychological emergencies, ensuring timely intervention and follow-up.
  • Makes appropriate referrals to local agencies and services, as necessary.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality and accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with legal and ethical standards.
  • Develops and delivers programming in collaboration with the Director to raise awareness of mental health issues, resources, and support services.
  • Participates in campus committees and outreach activities to promote mental health and wellness.
  • Collaborates with campus stakeholders and external agencies to support student wellness initiatives.
  • Conducts screenings for depression, anxiety, suicide risk, and other mental health diagnoses.
  • Updates and maintains mental health resources across multiple campus platforms.
  • Assists with the collection and analysis of data to inform service delivery and program improvement.
  • Provides services at Urban Satellite Centers in Perth Amboy and New Brunswick, as needed.
  • Participates in weekly clinical team meetings, supervision, and professional development activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
