The Memory Care Director is responsible for the daily operations of the Memory Care program, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, person-directed care and engagement for residents living with dementia. This role supervises caregiving staff, coordinates programming, facilitates family relations, and ensures compliance with regulatory standards. The Director fosters a meaningful, holistic, and dignified environment rooted in the “I’m Still Here” philosophy of care.

Requirements

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in gerontology, social work, therapeutic recreation, psychology, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience supervising staff in a dementia care setting, such as assisted living, memory care, or long-term care.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of dementia, Alzheimer’s, and evidence-based best practices in memory care.
  • Understanding of Title 22, Division 6, Chapter 8 regulations applicable to RCFE operations.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification
  • Working knowledge of computer software programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and employee database systems in a web-based environment.
  • A deep understanding and passion for older adults, particularly those experiencing cognitive challenges.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities and collaborative work ethic are essential.
  • Committed to delivering high-quality and professional interactions with residents, families, peers, volunteers, and team members in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Skilled in exhibiting adaptability, making informed decisions in high-pressure situations, and effectively prioritizing tasks and projects with flexibility and a positive attitude.
  • Completion of a background check.
  • Additional requirements may include a physical, TB test, fingerprint, and vaccinations per state/local guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Directly supervises and supports Memory Care Resident Assistants and caregiving staff.
  • Manage team member hiring, onboarding, scheduling, evaluations, and performance improvement.
  • Facilitates regular team meetings, in-service training, and dementia care education.
  • Ensures services and programs align with the “I’m Still Here” philosophy and support holistic wellness.
  • Collaborates with Life Enrichment, Spiritual Care, and other departments to provide meaningful engagement.
  • Monitors residents’ physical and cognitive status, initiates appropriate care plan updates, and communicates changes to the licensed nurse, families, and interdisciplinary team.
  • Leads family meetings, assists with assessments, and contributes to individualized service plans.
  • Supports residents in maintaining daily routines and dignity in all activities of daily living.
  • Ensures Memory Care programming and staffing practices align with California Title 22 RCFE regulations.
  • Maintains accurate documentation and supports compliance during inspections and audits.
  • Manages department expenses within budget.
  • Participates in leadership meetings and collaborates with the community’s Administrator and Health Care Coordinator(s) to promote quality care.
