About The Position

The Membership Specialist position within GSGLA drives sustainable membership growth and council health by supporting our girls, volunteers, parents, and champions to fulfill the Girl Scout mission. Departments in this community are involved with the advancement of mission delivery strategies; driving the full lifecycle management of products, platforms, and program, both digital and physical; volunteer engagement, support, and training; cultivation of local partnerships that drive membership retention, recruitment, and relevancy. Mission Delivery works closely across all departments in GSGLA to provide an exceptional experience for our members and to ensure vibrant and sustainable growth of the Council across the Greater Los Angeles area.

Seeks and acknowledges the views and ideas from customer (internal and external); identifies, prioritizes, and balances customer issues; takes time to answer questions and explain decisions; follows through on commitments to customers in a timely manner; maintains a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Project Management. Demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple projects while managing conflicting priorities and deadlines, formulate short- and long-term project goals, objectives, schedules, and priorities in line with council goals; anticipate issues, obstacles, or opportunities that may impact plans or actions; establish courses of action for accomplishing goals while attending to and incorporating information obtained during day-to-day administrative tasks.

  • Recommended Education, Training and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in lieu of education.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong human relation skills; ability to motivate people in small and large group settings
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with members and the public and provide prompt and courteous customer service to all customers in person, via phone, written note, and email
  • Demonstrated strong presentation skills
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced and frequently changing environment

  • Able to pass a criminal background check.

Responsibilities

  • Retaining membership, by helping to ensure a positive volunteer and girl experience within assigned area
  • Community Organizing; building, training, and overseeing volunteer teams in assigned geographical areas to strengthen the member experience at a hyper-local level.
  • Providing Troop Leader Support; ensuring that volunteers feel supported by Girl Scouts, and confident in their ability to facilitate girl programming.
  • Acting as a council liaison between local volunteers and staff, ensuring that council strategic priorities are aligned at the volunteer service unit level.
  • Membership Retention: Is accountable for meeting or exceeding an annual membership retention goal for girl and adult members. In partnership with volunteers, manages member renewal campaigns. Provides excellent customer service. Identifies and implements solutions to encourage longevity in the Girl Scout program.
  • Community Organizing: Builds, trains, and supervises community-based volunteer teams (service teams) to ensure an equitable and fulfilling experience for girls and volunteers within each community assigned to. Supports the council's volunteer management system including the recruitment, screening, selection, placement, development, training, recognition, and re-assignment of volunteers. Works with service unit volunteers to ensure that their plans are in alignment with council strategic priorities. Prepares and provides a variety of reports to volunteers to assist with plans and in measuring progress.
  • Troop Leader Support: Orient, mentor, and support new troop leaders through their first year. In partnership with volunteer service teams, develop and execute plans to ensure that all new leaders feel comfortable, empowered, and supported. Assist troop leaders with parent/family meetings and first troop meetings (as needed/required) Assist with conflict management and conflict resolution. Provide support to all troop leaders by answering questions, providing resources, and connecting them to the correct SME when necessary.
  • Council Liaison Provides ongoing support, superv1s1on, and direction to administrative volunteers in assigned geographic areas by interpreting Girl Scouts of the USA and GSGLA council policies, standards, and procedures and by directing volunteers to additional support services. Ensures Girl Scouting is open to all girls and adults by delivering the Girl Scouts message of pluralism and diversity to members of the council. Acts as main point of contact to members in assigned area requesting council staff support. Responds to all requests of support in a timely manner. Documents and logs interactions with members and volunteers within assigned area in council CRM, ensuring a seamless customer experience. Provides problem solving and conflict resolution support when appropriate and in a timely manner. Serves as the main point of contact for service unit and troop volunteers. Promotes and assists with council programs, activities, public relations, and fund development endeavors. Communicates information to volunteers in a timely manner, acts as a Subject Matter Expert as it relates to council policies, procedures, and priorities. Present council updates to volunteers at meetings. Hosts webinars, volunteer meetings, and trainings and needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Teamwork Works interdepartmentally to ensure Council goals are met. Works with cross-functional team to determine or develop innovative strategies to ensure the effective delivery of customer service to our members.
