About The Position

Local Progress and the Local Progress Impact Lab are looking for a highly skilled Membership Coordinator with a track record of recruitment, engagement, base and coalition building and strong project management. Working as part of a Membership and Organizing team, the Membership Coordinator will be responsible for organizing in non-staffed states and regions, particularly in rural and small localities, supporting caucus management, preemption programming and national campaigns and member mobilizations. This position will require the ability to project manage within the Membership & Organizing, Program & Campaign and Policy & Legal Teams, supporting the existing identity caucus infrastructure while supporting the formation of new identity caucuses, support national campaigns and member mobilizations, contribute to proactive and defensive strategies to push back against abusive state preemption while identifying trends and opportunities to organize across the network, and laying the groundwork and solidifying the infrastructure to grow capacity in rural and small localities in non-staffed states and regions. We are seeking a candidate who is an organizer who understands relational organizing, long-term base building, strategy and campaigns. The Membership Coordinator will report to the Organizing Director.

Requirements

  • At least 3-5 years of experience, with at least 2 years of experience with membership organizing.
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills; experience in relational organizing and an ability to relate to a diverse group of people from a variety of local contexts and backgrounds.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • A track record of building successful coalitions.
  • Attention to detail and good organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects.
  • A commitment to inside/outside strategy and movement governance that features deep partnership between “outside” organizing and “inside” elected officials.
  • A demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and economic justice and a deep interest in local policy, politics, and government.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in issue campaigns, advocacy, and/or base building organizing
  • Experience working with local or state elected officials
  • Experience with training and/or meeting facilitation
  • Familiarity with digital organizing tools and strategies

Responsibilities

  • Membership Recruitment & Organizing: Build and strengthen membership including developing and implementing a strategy to continue to both recruit new members & increase engagement of existing members in non-staffed states and regions, with a focus on small localities and rural membership.
  • Identity Caucus Development and Support: As part of Local Progress’ work to build a platform for multi-racial organizing, caucuses are formed with the intention of building community, creating a safe healing space where members are able to deepen their connections, provide peer mentorship, share best practices to advance racial and gender equity, celebrate one another and contribute to the larger network. This position will support the Organizing Director in strengthening existing identity caucuses and support the formation of new identity caucuses.
  • Proactive and Defensive Strategies: Support the Managing Director, Legal & Policy and the Managing Director, Membership & Organizing on proactive and defensive strategies to push back against abusive state preemption while identifying trends and opportunities to organize across the network.
  • Policy & Program support: Support network mobilizations as part of national projects (issue campaigns, federal advocacy, etc)), as needed and in coordination with Membership & Organizing team.
