Member of Technical Staff - Biology

Phylo, Inc.South San Francisco, CA

About The Position

Phylo is an applied research lab building agentic intelligence to accelerate discovery for every biomedical scientist. We believe AI agents will fundamentally transform how biomedical research is done. Our fast-growing team brings together researchers and engineers across AI and biology. We're looking for a research engineer with a biology background to ensure our agents meet the standards of real scientific practice. You'll work on agent quality across biomedical domains—evaluating outputs, improving scientific rigor, and shaping how our agents fit into the daily workflows of working scientists. This role sits at the intersection of engineering and biology. You'll construct and validate biomedical workflows, integrating existing biomedical tools and datasets, build evaluation pipelines to test agent behavior against domain expectations, and iterate closely with our AI team. You'll also partner with ecosystem collaborators to unlock new agent capabilities and contribute directly to product features that expand what scientists can do with Biomni Lab.

Requirements

  • Background in biology, biomedical science, or a related field (degree or equivalent experience).
  • Engineering skills: comfortable writing code, building pipelines, and working with data.
  • Familiarity with common biomedical tools, databases, or workflows (e.g., sequence analysis, literature search, experimental design).
  • Ability to move quickly and iterate in a fast-paced research environment.
  • Strong communication skills and comfort working across biology and engineering teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with LLMs, agents, or AI/ML systems.
  • Industry experience in biotech or pharma.
  • Broad experience across multiple biomedical domains.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and improve agent outputs across biomedical domains, ensuring scientific accuracy and rigor.
  • Build workflows that integrate existing biomedical tools, databases, and data sources into agent capabilities.
  • Develop evaluation pipelines and build internal and public benchmarks to test agent behavior against real-world scientific expectations.
  • Partner with ecosystem collaborators—academic labs, tool providers, data partners—to expand what our agents can do.
  • Contribute to product features that bring agents into the daily workflows of working scientists.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and equity - share in building the future of biomedical discovery
  • Full medical, dental, and vision coverage, including free therapy sessions and eyewear stipend
  • 401(k) to help you build long-term financial security (US only)
  • Unlimited PTO to recharge when you need it (US only)
  • Lunch and snacks when you're in the office
  • Regular team offsites and company events
  • A culture of excellence and speed - we move fast, think big, and support each other every step of the way
  • Your work will directly impact our mission to 100X biomedical discoveries through AI
