About The Position

Under the direction of the Pipe & Cupola Operations Manager, the Melt Manager is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the melting department, including Cupola and related melting processes. This position oversees the production of molten iron supplied to downstream molding operations and ensures that all melting activities meet environmental requirements, quality specifications, and production goals. The Melt Manager provides direct leadership to Cupola Supervisors and melting personnel, maintains proper raw material inventory levels, and drives continuous improvement across safety, quality, and productivity.

Requirements

  • 5–8 years of Cupola or melting-related experience in an industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of chemistry control, iron adjustments, and raw material calculations.
  • Strong diagnostic and problem‑solving skills related to melting operations.
  • Prior leadership experience supervising teams in a manufacturing or industrial setting.
  • Ability to complete all required safety and environmental training.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities under demanding production schedules.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 tools (Excel, Teams, Power BI).
  • Ability to wear required PPE and always follow all plant safety rules.
  • Excellent attendance and punctuality.

  • Secondary or technical schooling in an engineering or industrial field preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all melting operations—including Cupola and supporting systems—are run safely and in compliance with environmental standards.
  • Monitor Cupola operations and support supervisors in maintaining stable process conditions.
  • Plan and order metallic scrap monthly while maintaining required inventory levels; complete monthly reconciliations with Accounting.
  • Determine weekly raw material charge requirements (cast, returns, steel, limestone, silicon carbide, coke).
  • Order all melting raw materials and refractories as needed.
  • Schedule bottom drops, furnace relines, and other critical maintenance activities; verify timely and effective maintenance completion.
  • Conduct monthly inspections of the Ladle Room to ensure proper availability and condition of ladles for production.
  • Review and adjust melting processes to improve quality, productivity, and iron consistency.
  • Perform or oversee random inspections of scrap iron.
  • Support supervisors in proper use of chemistry control tools and calculations.
  • Ensure Cupola Supervisors monitor and record iron chemistry, temperature, and operating parameters at required intervals.
  • Confirm iron quality meets specifications before release to production.
  • Lead Cupola Supervisors and melting personnel to ensure safe, efficient, and continuous operations.
  • Develop and implement training plans for supervisors, ensuring high competency in melting operations.
  • Motivate and coach team members to uphold Tyler Pipe safety standards, production goals, and quality expectations.
  • Ensure proper use of Leader Standard Work (LSW) and Training Tracking tools.
  • Promote a culture focused on continuous improvement and operational excellence.
  • Follow directives from the Plant Manager regarding departmental priorities and improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain and update Work Instructions and Job Safety Analyses annually.
  • Ensure all safety and environmental documentation is completed accurately and timely.
  • Complete incident reporting and Root Cause Corrective Actions (RCCA) as required.
  • Manage documentation related to training compliance, practical problem-solving tools, job instruction documents, Gantt charts, and project planning tools.
  • Track and ensure training compliance for all melting personnel.
  • Demonstrate a dedication to safety by wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) when entering and working in the plant.
  • Keep work area clean, safe, and orderly.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by Pipe & Cupola Operations Manager.
