About The Position

Pharmacy technicians assist and support licensed pharmacists in providing health care and medications to patients. Pharmacy technicians must have a broad knowledge of pharmacy practice, and be skilled in the techniques required to order, stock, package, and compound and otherwise prepare medications. Maintains a professional presence throughout the hospital. Assures pharmacy services and activities are carried out to meet goals and standards of both Cardinal Health and the client/hospital.

Requirements

  • High school degree or equivalent
  • Current technician certification and required licensing.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience as a hospital pharmacy technician
  • ACPE or ASHP accredited course in compounding sterile preparations preferred
  • Training and proficiency in age specific therapies for hospital patients preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Procures and distributes medication orders per physician request, pharmacist request, or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures, and protocols
  • Fills prescriptions, physician orders, medication kits and carts, stock requisitions and automated dispensing system accurately and in a timely manner
  • Assist in the process for patient and department charges, and that they are accurately and timely completed.
  • Assist with the purchase of drugs and supplies in accordance with best demonstrated practices to provide medications in a safe, efficacious, and cost effective manner.
  • Assist with the preparation and delivery of medication throughout the hospital and to patients both in the retail pharmacy and through the meds-to-beds program.
  • Maintains compliance with USP 795/797/800 non-sterile and sterile preparation standards
  • Assist with hospital and pharmacy personnel orientation for new hires
  • Ensure documentation for all drug recalls, participates in inspections of drug storage areas, upholds pharmacy standards and best practices, and maintains security of all drug storage areas and confidentiality of passwords.
  • Attends and participates in departmental meetings, in-services, and quality improvement programs
  • Maintains all required training and education per department requirements (e.g. mySpark, myLearning, Care Learning, Continuing Education)
  • Adheres to hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Complies with all requirements related to risk management, safety, security, fire, and infection control. Complies with all applicable state, local and federal regulations
  • Maintains safety-integrity-professionalism of pharmacy at all times
  • Answers the telephone, identifying self and department; directs calls to appropriate personnel
  • Keeps pharmacy areas clean, neat, and well organized; Keeps pharmacy equipment clean
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor
  • Assures confidentiality of patient records.
  • Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
  • Assists in the resolution of problems or concerns while being a supportive team member.
  • Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of drug generic-trade names, dosage forms and strengths marketed, and exhibits functional familiarity with herbals and over-the-counter (OTC) medications.
  • Interacts effectively and professionally with patients and their families, as well as with Pharmacy colleagues and other members of the health care team. Is always in full compliance with the hospital dress code policy.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
  • Collects a list of the patient’s current home medications in anticipation of admission.
  • Is responsible for gathering all information that is needed to completely and accurately enter into the hospital’s computer system.
  • Is responsible for obtaining additional medication information from outside sources when necessary or practical (including physician’s office, mail-order pharmacy, retail pharmacy, extended care facility, or another acute care facility).
  • Effectively communicates with other healthcare professionals to maintain adequate workflow and identify patient specific needs
  • Accurately enters the home medication list into the hospital’s information system for utilization by the Provider responsible for admitting or discharging the patient from the hospital.
  • Completes the computer entry of the home medication list in a timely manner so it can be used as the patient’s admitting orders.
  • Directs any unresolved issues to the pharmacist.
  • Assist the main pharmacy with duties to provide medications for patients in a timely manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
