The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) is responsible to the laboratory manager or to the laboratory medical director. Duties will include clinical laboratory testing in microbiology, chemistry, hematology, serology, blood bank, parasitology, urinalysis, or referred procedures. The MLS will maintain logs, binders, and records in accordance with the governing agency. They will confirm, verify, correlate, and interpret results using in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, instruments, and physiology. They will share in performance of clinical lab functions associated with the lab. They will provide technical guidance and instruction to students, interns, residents, staff, and other employees as needed. The medical laboratory scientist has the authority to order questionable results rechecked, to judge the adequacy of submitted specimens and to request another if original is unsatisfactory. May be required to perform special tasks including but not limited to: individual projects, policy review, creating new policies, section head responsibilities, serving on hospital committees, or special task forces.
