About The Position

LifeShare Blood Center is seeking a certified Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)-Scientific Services Laboratory to join their investigative team. The MLS will be responsible for specimen processing, high-complexity testing, and reporting of results in accordance with CLIA regulations and internal policies. The MLS position is graded by experience level into categories I, II, and III, with prior experience potentially allowing for a higher level assignment at hiring. Relocation assistance is available. MLS responsibilities are governed by the Code of Federal Regulations as cited in 42 CFR 493.1495 Standard; Testing personnel responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or related scientific field, or equivalent work experience
  • MLS(ASCP) or equivalent certification REQUIRED
  • Current MLS licensure, or license eligible by LA State Board of Medical Examiners (LSBME)
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient/donor information at all times.
  • Ability to work effectively under stressful situations.
  • Must be dependable, punctual, and possess effective communication skills.
  • Must demonstrate a positive approach toward customers and co-workers, maintaining professionalism at all times.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum 2 years blood banking experience preferred, but not required

Responsibilities

  • Perform molecular testing on patient and donor genomic DNA samples to enhance transfusion therapy.
  • Ensure results are properly documented and reported in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Perform special testing to define unique immunohematological problems, and communicate findings with requesting facility to assist in determination of appropriate transfusion therapy.
  • Perform routine serological testing using donor and/or patient blood samples.
  • Support clinical trial activities through testing or review, ensuring all aspects of each trial adhere to IRB-approved processes and procedures, including maintaining confidentiality of proprietary information.
  • Recognize testing and/or result discrepancies (genotype/phenotype) and select appropriate troubleshooting to resolve, seeking supervisory assistance when needed.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance activities such as performing quality control testing, involvement in proficiency testing, troubleshooting unexpected results, recognizing and reporting procedural deviations, maintaining equipment, and assessing/reporting equipment failures or issues.
  • Assist in maintaining laboratory work areas by cleaning and decontaminating work surfaces, ordering and stocking supplies, investigating back-ordered items, and suggesting items for outside purchases.
  • Meet or exceed customer expectations and adhere to established quality practices while seeking to continually improve work performance.
  • Model LifeShare’s mission and values, integrating them into daily decisions, behaviors and actions while promoting cooperation within the team to achieve departmental and company goals through effective communication.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, such as: assisting with MLS student rotations, patient file maintenance, SOP development and revision, document control, and safety initiatives.
