Job Description: Job Summary The Medical Technologist will coordinate the bone and tissue banking services for UofL Health facilities. This includes managing bone and tissue inventory, record keeping, and process control. They will gather monthly statistics, chair biannual meetings, participate in accreditation inspections and keep up to date on all changes to Joint Commission, FDA, AABB and CAP standards. They are responsible for new procedure development, updating procedures and reviewing procedures per standards. The coordinator will have good communication skills and interact pleasantly and professionally with all co-workers, medical staff, patients, visitors, and others. The coordinator shall actively support the policies of the Laboratory and organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science or in a related science (example, laboratory sciences such as chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, hematology, clinical microscopy, cytogenetics, blood bank, molecular biology, cytotechnology, or immunology. (required)
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist by one of the following accrediting agencies is required.
  • Medical Technologist (MT) certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
  • Medical Technologist (MT) certified by the American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist certified by the American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • Medical Technologist (MT) certified by the Department of Health, Education & Welfare/US Department of Health & Human Services (HEW/HHS)
  • Technologist certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) in one of the following areas: Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Cytogenetics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or Cytology
  • Technologist certified by the American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB) in one of the following areas: Medical Technologist, Andrology Laboratory Scientist, Embryology Laboratory Scientist, or Molecular Diagnostics Technologist
  • Beginning in January 2004, newly certified individuals must participate in The American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB) Board of Registry (BOR) Certification Maintenance Program (required)

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum one (1) year of lab experience as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the bone and tissue bank services for the system.
  • Gather utilization statistics for all facilities.
  • Monitors and maintains inventory to include checking for missing or new products, Interact with physicians, surgery staff and tissue representatives to coordinate ordering of products for scheduled surgeries.
  • Educate and guide support staff (BB technologists, OR staff, Supply staff) in receipt of tissue and inventory management.
  • Audits and reconciles tissue documentation.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance is maintained in all policies, processes, systems, and procedures.
  • Monitors bone and tissue usage, billing, and charging.
  • Schedule and chair biannual tissue meetings for multiple facilities.
  • Attend teleconferences and other related local continuing education opportunities and training.
  • Participate in staff meetings.
  • Facilitate all bone and tissue recalls, lookbacks and outcomes in coordination with the Laboratory Medical Director and Risk Management.
  • Utilizes UDITracker Solution for inventory management.
  • Leads all software upgrades.
  • Contribute to the efficient operation of the laboratory.
  • Demonstrate commitment to professional growth and competence.
